First Star of the Week: Martin Jones

Martin Jones has quickly been climbing our Three Stars of the Week rankings. Starting as an honorable mention in week one, Jones snagged our Third Star of the Week in Week 3.

He has stayed solid, continued to improve, and has become a valuable asset to his team.

The story for the Seattle Kraken was much different last season. They struggled in net as their goaltenders struggled to piece things together between the pipes.

To be quite honest, when the Kraken signed Jones, I wasn’t too enthused. He had been a great goaltender in his prime but was showing signs of slowing down in the last few years.

I thought he would spend most of the season on the bench putting on puppet shows (a little Ron Burgundy humor there for you.) Joking aside, I’ve had to eat my words, and I’m glad I always ask the Good Lord to make them taste like honey. In the absence of Philipp Grubauer, Jones proved that he hadn’t lost his touch.

While he only played in two of the Seattle Kraken’s three games this week, Jones put up an impressive .966 save percentage. He was a brick wall in Minnesota, not allowing a single puck to slip by him, and earned a shutout. The team backed him and responded by putting up four goals.

Of the 37 shots he faced against the Pittsburgh Penguins, he let in just two goals. His team was in a battle the entire game against a struggling Penguins team. However, Jones put up a hard fight and led his team to a 3-2 win.
