Seattle Seahawks: How does the Tyler Locket – D.K. Metcalf duo stack up?

By Chris Phillips

Now that the Seattle Seahawks secured Tyler Lockett long term, we discuss where he and receiver partner D.K. Metcalf stack up in the NFL.

What the Seattle Seahawks have in Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf is special. What this duo does on the field should not be taken for granted. Lockett and Metcalf are two of the very best wide receivers in the NFL. Prior to Metcalf’s arrival, Lockett, who Doug Baldwin groomed, was the toast of the team.

How highly do the Seahawks regard Lockett? Enough for the salary cap-strapped team to give him a four-year, $69.2M contract with $37M. His value has gone even higher since D.K. Metcalf joined the team in 2019.

Metcalf has all the desired measurables, but he, too, was brought along slowly. It wasn’t until about halfway through 2019 that Metcalf became someone that opponents have to game plan against. This year he’s made every team regret letting him slip to the end of 2019’s second round (64th overall).

These two are probably the best pair of wide receivers the Seahawks have since Darrell Jackson and Koren Robinson? Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin or Darrell Jackson and Bobby Engram can be argued to be better or on the same level. Those duos were great, but when it’s all said and done, this current pair of receivers will blow them all out of the water.

So, let’s talk about this current duo some more. It may be a little premature to rank them so highly, but the truth is the sky is the limit. They’re both young and have a fantastic quarterback throwing them the ball.

It’s early in Metcalf’s career to consider him in the hall of fame, but that’s his current trajectory. Last year, only his second in the NFL, Metcalf broke the Seahawks record for most receiving yards in a season.

Current NFL Duos

Let’s talk about where this current duo ranks in the NFL for current wide receiver duos. Honorable mentions are DJ Moore and Robby Anderson of Carolina, T.Y. Hilton and Michael Pittman of Indianapolis, DeAndre Hopkins and Larry Fitzgerald of Arizona, and Mike Williams and Keenan Allen of the Los Angeles Chargers.

  1. Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley – Atlanta Falcons
  2. Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf – Seattle Seahawks
  3. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin – Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  4. Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods – Los Angeles Rams
  5. Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson – Minnesota Vikings

The reason the Seahawks duo is second is that Julio Jones is a no-doubt Hall of Famer. And to me, that means something. As previously stated, Metcalf’s trajectory is heading toward a Canton, but Julio’s already there. This is going off just the wide receivers and not the quarterbacks throwing them the ball.

Top Seahawks Duos

There is no doubt Lockett and Metcalf belong among the Seattle Seahawks’ top receiving duos.

  1. Darrell Jackson and Koren Robinson
  2. Darrell Jackson and Bobby Engram
  3. Golden Take and Doug Baldwin
  4. Steve Largent and Sam McCullum

In my opinion, Lockett and Metcalf should be at the top of the list. These two can do it all; go deep or over the middle. Lockett can play in the slot or outside. It’s the same with Metcalf. Additionally, Metcalf blocks as if he’s a tight end.

Metcalf talked about his current and future goals as a wide receiver after breaking Largent’s record.

“Just to be able to break a record that’s been standing for so long is just a blessing to be able to be in this position and (it’s) an amazing opportunity I have in front of me. I kind of looked at the record last year and saw how far I was towards the end of the season, so I knew it was going to be on the agenda this year to break it,” Metcalf said. “I’ve got to start small, start with Largent’s record and then hopefully move on up to Calvin (Johnson)’s record,”

All-Time Duos

What’s next for this duo? Will they be among the NFL’s all-time elite? Being up in the ranks as one of the best, if not the best wide receiver tandems of all time. Up there with the likes of:

  • Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne – Indianapolis Colts (2001 – 2008).
  • Mark Clayton and Mark Duper – Miami Dolphins (1983 – 1992).
  • Randy Moss and Cris Carter – Minnesota Vikings (1998 – 2001).
  • John Stallworth and Lynn Swann – Pittsburgh Steelers (1974 – 1982).
  • Jerry Rice and John Taylor – San Francisco 49ers (1987 – 1995).
  • Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce – St. Louis Rams (1999 – 2007).

If Lockett and Metcalf continue to do what they’re doing, and at the pace they do it at, they should at the very least be in the conversation. All-time numbers are all-time numbers. Playing in a smaller market shouldn’t affect their numbers or the way the pair is remembered.

The sky is the limit for Metcalf who seems to be just hitting his stride. That makes the future even brighter for this duo. However, I’m sure some of you will disagree with my rankings of the Seahawks wide receiver tandems. I encourage you to share your reasons why the other tandems should be ranked elsewhere.
