Zags Wednesday: Spotlight on Dominick Harris

Gonzaga Bulldogs
Dominick Harris, Gonzaga Bulldogs.

This week’s Gonzaga Bulldog in the spotlight is Dominick Harris. I thought Harris would be a member of Coach Few’s starters but a foot injury has sidelined him so far this season.

Last season, Dominick Harris stood out as the Gonzaga Bulldogs substitute who provided a spark when Jalen Suggs needed a break. There were others, but Harris was the one who stood out for me.

Beginnings

He was born in Murrieta, CA, on January 3, 2002, to Neki and Shawn Harris. Dominick attended Rancho Christian High School with the Mobley brothers Isaiah and Evan.

Harris had many high school accolades, but this was my favorite.

The Allen Iverson 2020 Classic – Harris was selected for this remarkable experience. “The AIRC is truly a unique experience. It’s the only grassroots basketball event of its caliber that is run by a Hall of Fame legend who is hands-on, engaged, and involved directly with the players. These soon-to-be NBA stars actually train and compete under the guidance of Allen Iverson and other NBA legends.” Joining Harris on this team were Jalen Suggs and Evan Mobley, who are now great NBA rookies.

Dominick committed to Gonzaga in 2018 while a sophomore in high school.

The Gonzaga years

Freshman – When Dominick got to Gonzaga, Jalen Suggs got there also. Suggs left him fighting for playing time. Like many in his position, Coach Few says players have to earn their spot in his rotation. Harris earned it. He was ready to go in when Suggs was in foul trouble or just needed time to breathe. However, so were Aaron Cook and Andrew Nembhard. I got a good look at Harris when he did get in, and what I saw left me confident that the Bulldogs would be fine when Suggs left for the NBA.

Harris played 25 games in his first year, averaging 3.0 points per game. He shot 41.8 percent from the field, 39.0 percent from the arc, and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.

Sophomore – Unfortunately, problems with his foot forced Harris to the sidelines for this season. He had surgery for a torn plantar fascia in his right foot on October 13, 2021. If he hadn’t been injured, the starting five for Coach Few could have been Drew Timme, Chet Holmgren, Julian Strawther, Dominick Harris, and Andrew Nembhard. With a speedy Rasir Bolton waiting with Anton Watson, the quiet enforcer, to come in as subs.

With Timme, Nembhard, and Bolton leaving this year, hopefully for the NBA, there is a definite place for Harris next season, with Hunter Sallis and Nolan Hickman ready to join Few’s three-guard starting lineup.

That’s it for this week’s spotlight. As always if you have a player you want to see in the spotlight, leave their name in the comment section or on social media. Until Monday when we’ll cover the Gonzaga Bulldogs Week 15 please stay safe and healthy.
