ZAGS 360 – An unexpectedly quiet Week 3 for Gonzaga basketball

Gonzaga Bulldogs
Gonzaga basketball head coach Mark Few.

Week three has no Gonzaga basketball to report on due to the program’s Covid-19 protocol. Their games have been postponed through December 18.

Gonzaga basketball paused their men’s games until December 14 due to Covid protocol. One player and one non-player tested positive for the disease. They postponed only the four home games against Tarleton State, Southern, Northern Arizona, and Idaho. Zags basketball competition will resume on December 19.

There was no “Terrifying Three” to watch light up the court. No Drew Timme, Jalen Suggs, or Corey Kispert to report on. No Andrew Nembhard and Joel Ayayi electrifying us as they hold together their teammates and help win the game.

The Week Ahead

Game action resumes on December 19 when the Zags set off to Sioux Falls to play Iowa. Hopefully, all will be well with both programs. Iowa is ranked number three to Gonzaga’s number one, and this should be as good of a matchup as the one that was canceled against second-ranked Baylor on December 5. Iowa’s record is 6-0. This will be one supercharged game.

As I’ve written over the previous two weeks – there could be many postponements or “pauses” to come from Covid related protocols. Since last week, the following teams have postponed games as per CBS Sports:

  • Dec. 12: Xavier at Providence
  • Dec. 12: Northern Arizona at Gonzaga
  • Dec. 12: Charleston Southern at Duke
  • Dec. 12: Saint John’s at Texas Tech
  • Dec. 13: Texas at Baylor
  • Dec. 13: William & Mary at Virginia
  • Dec. 13: UConn at Georgetown
  • Dec. 15: Tarleton State at Baylor
  • Dec. 15: Detroit at Kentucky
  • Dec. 15: Seton Hall at Xavier
  • Dec. 17: UConn at Providence

Three things to watch for

  1. Postponements and cancellations. Until there is no more Covid, this is the state not only of college basketball but any college or professional sport.
  2. The Gonzaga Bulldogs coming back with a vengeance to make up for being away.
  3. A date for the rescheduled Gonzaga/Baylor game.

On behalf of Pacific Northwest Sports and myself, we send our best wishes to every one of these teams and every player as they play not only for themselves but for us, their fans. As always, feel free to leave any comments below. Have a great week.
