ZAGS 360 – Gonzaga Bulldogs romp through Week 4 slaying all they meet
The Gonzaga Bulldogs stomped on their opponents, including the reigning NCAA champion Virginia Cavaliers, in a high-scoring holiday week.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs are on a roll. Their 7–0 record does not reflect their season. So far, Gonzaga not only wins, but they beat down their opponents.
Gonzaga v Northwestern State – Game 1
The Gonzaga Bulldogs had their way against Northwestern State, winning the game 95–57. With the lead at 64–39 and less than 12 minutes to go, Coach Mark Few took his starters out of the game and let the underclassmen finish.
Gonzaga led in points in the paint, 50–22. They led with rebounds 46–22. The Zags shot 55 percent from the field while NWSU was held to 37.5 percent.
Corey Kispert led the way with 27 points, seven rebounds; Anton Watson had 15 points and seven rebounds. Drew Timme and Jalen Suggs contributed a dozen points each, Timme with eight rebounds, and Suggs seven rebounds and seven assists.
The two teams met the next day again.
Gonzaga v Northwestern – Game 2
Whose bright idea was it for the Demons to play number one Gonzaga two days in a row? Not a good idea for them. The Bulldogs won the game 98–75. Northwestern State outscored the Zags in the second half 61–52 but still could not come close to defeating them.
Drew Timme led the way this night with 25 points and nine rebounds. Jalen Suggs had 19 points and six rebounds, and Corey Kispert rounded out the triangle with 18 points and six rebounds.
The Bulldogs also had 13 steals, and NWSU committed 17 turnovers.
Gonzaga vs. Virginia Cavaliers
The week’s most exciting game was Saturday’s contest against the reigning NCAA champion and 15th ranked Virginia Cavaliers in Fort Worth, Texas. Corey Kispert scored a career-high 32 points and tied a school record with nine from beyond the arc. That was more than enough in a 98–75 victory. Drew Timme contributed 29 points and eight rebounds.
Virginia never even had a lead. UVA came into the game fifth in the country, allowing 54 points per game. The Zags hit 54 points, 3:04 into the second half. Guard Kihei Clark led the Cavaliers with 19 points.
Gonzaga is now 7–0. Here’s what we can look forward to.
The Week Ahead
- The week starts with the Zags against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. The Lumberjacks started its season with five straight losses. Needless to say, we can pick the Zags to win this one.
- On Tuesday, 12/29, the Bulldogs meet with the 4–1 Dixie State Trailblazers. They come to this matchup after squeaking by a win against the Denver Pioneers 73–70.
- West Coast Conference play begins on Saturday against the San Francisco Dons. USF is 6–4 this season. They barely won their last game, 68–65 against Grand Canyon.
What to watch for
- Cameron Shelton of Northern Arizona, in their one victory, scored 27 points and five rebounds.
- Cameron Gooden of Dixie State, whose 23 points helped the Trailblazers defeat Denver.
- In the game against Grand Canyon, Asbjorn Midtgaard had 18 points and ten rebounds for USF.
- As previously stated, we will watch for any teams postponing games due to COVID-19.
This was another great week for the Zags, with another on the way.
