Washington State Cougars release revised 2020 football schedule
Friday Afternoon, the Washington State Cougars released their Pac-12 only football Schedule.
A few weeks ago, the Pac-12 said due to COVID-19 concerns; they were going to play a conference only football schedule in 2020. Friday, they followed through with the plan. While the new Washington Cougars State schedule isn’t a radical departure from what we expected it to be, there are some significant changes, other than the elimination of non-conference opponents.
September
- 9/26 vs. Utah Utes
October
- 10/3 vs. Oregon Ducks
- 10/10 at UCLA Bruins
- 10/17 vs. California Golden Bears
- 10/24 BYE
- 10/30 at Stanford Cardinal
November
- 11/7 at Southern California Trojans
- 11/14 vs. Arizona State Sun Devils
- 11/21 at Oregon State Beavers
- 11/27 vs. Washington Huskies – APPLE CUP
December
- 12/5 at Colorado Buffaloes
- 12/18 or 19 Pac-12 Championship Game
What stays the same
Washington State plays the same nine other Pac-12 teams on the original conference slate and in the same places. Additionally, the conference season begins on the same date, September 26.
The bye week remains October 24, after the fourth Pac-12 contest. Most importantly, the Apple Cup Game against UW is still the traditional weekend after Thanksgiving.
What is different
The number one thing that stands out is the Washington State Cougars are thrown into the fire to start the 2020 season. Wazzu opens against two tough opponents, defending South Division Champion Utah comes to Martin Stadium on September 26, followed by Oregon the next week. With so many changes to the team, the Cougars would instead have opened against Cal as initially scheduled. So they would have a game under their belts before facing Utah.
In order to play a 10-game Pac-12 only schedule, and to give each team five home and five road games, Wazzu will go to Los Angeles on November 7 to face conference preseason favorites USC.
Finally, the Apple Cup game against UW will still happen on the same day, but it won’t end the season as it traditionally does. Instead, the season concludes December 5 at Colorado.
