Washington State Cougars: NFL mock draft consensus on Abraham Lucas 2.0
This is our 2022 Mock Draft Consensus 2.0. PNWS lets you know where former Washington State Cougars offensive tackle Abraham Lucas will go in the NFL Draft.
The NFL Draft is an important time for the Washington State Cougars football program. It always hurts to lose good players, but the Cougs and their fans can celebrate WSU’s recent stars headed to play at the highest level of professional football.
Putting players in the National Football League is some of the best advertising new Cougars coach Jake Dickert can get when recruiting prospects. Last season Wazzu didn’t have any players get drafted, so Abe Lucas getting selected this year is a big deal.
After last year’s COVID re-shuffle, the pre-draft season is back to business as usual in 2022. The NFL Combine was the first week in March, and Washington State’s Pro Day was March 28. Most importantly, the NFL Draft is live from Las Vegas, April 28-30.
Pacific Northwest Sports audited 45 different mock drafts to see where Lucas is winds up. The sources we use may vary from edition to edition, but they are all credible. This time we included ESPN, USA Today, NFL.com, CBS Sports, Walter Football, Pro Football Focus, The Athletic, The Draft Network, and more. Twenty of the mocks went two rounds, including 13 that covered through Round 3. A few went even deeper.
Abe Lucas – Offensive tackle
Measurables
Height: 6-7
Weight: 315 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.92 seconds
Bench Press Reps: 24
3-cone drill: 7.25 seconds
20-yard shuttle: 4.4 Seconds
The short shuttle matters for offensive linemen, and Lucas posted the best time in the drill among all blockers at the combine. It also helps that he is a four-year starter with a massive frame. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Lucas goes in the top 75 after his testing numbers, but the Raiders won’t be mad to see him still on the board (at 86). – Dane Brugler, the Athletic.
At the Draft
Highest Draft Spot – Round 2, Jacksonville, 33rd overall.
Lowest Draft Spot – Round 3, Las Vegas Raiders, 86th overall.
Most Common Draft Spot – Round 2, Cincinnati Bengals, 63rd overall.
Scouting Report
Looking over the scouting reports, it’s easy to see why Lucas is a legit pro prospect. He’s big, strong, and has a long reach, making it difficult for pass rushers to run around him. Lucas plays within his talents and has a keen awareness of what he can and can’t do.
His strong, athletic base helps him to drive block defenders in the run game. A four-year starter for the Washington State Cougars, he uses outstanding balance to take his man’s best hit and keep control.
Lucas has an all-around solid game, so there aren’t many weak areas. He’s not the fastest guy around, and his footwork could use some improvement at times. The biggest thing for him to work on is getting lower when blocking to keep better control of his assignment.
In addition to his size, Lucas also possesses a strong athletic foundation. While he may not be elite in some areas, he’s far above average and easily surpasses the starting threshold. Lucas has exceptional initial burst blocking on the move, and he also shows flashes of excellent lateral agility, transferring his weight effortlessly. – Ian Cummings, Pro football Network.
Draft Prospectus 1.0
Big Abe had a fantastic Combine and followed it up with a strong showing at Washington State’s Pro Day. It shows in the mock drafts. Every draft we looked at that went into the third round included him. Most mocks have Lucas as a solid second-day pick.
He has the size and tenacity that can’t be taught. Lucas might not be an immediate starter as a rookie. If the team that picks him has a little patience, they will be rewarded.
