Washington State Cougars: NFL mock draft consensus on Abe Lucas

Washington State Cougars
Abe Lucas, Washington State Cougars.

This is our first Mock Draft Consensus of 2022. PNWS lets you know where former Washington State Cougars offensive tackle Abe Lucas will go in the NFL Draft.

The NFL Draft is an important time for the Washington State Cougars football program. It always hurts to lose good players, but the Cougs and their fans can celebrate WSU alumni headed to play at the highest level of professional football.

Putting players in the NFL is some of the best advertising new Cougars coach Jake Dickert can get when recruiting. Last season Wazzu didn’t have any players get drafted, so Abe Lucas getting selected this year is a big deal.

After last year’s COVID re-shuffle, the pre-draft season is back to business as usual in 2022. The NFL Combine runs March 1 – 7. Washington State’s Pro Day should take place somewhere between one to two weeks after that. And the NFL Draft is April 28-30.

Pacific Northwest Sports audited 25 different mock drafts to see where Lucas is winds up. The sources we use may vary from edition to edition but are all credible. This time we included ESPN, USA Today, NFL.com, CBS Sports, Walter Football, Pro Football Focus, The Draft Network, and more. Thirteen of the mocks went two rounds; eight of them covered through Round 3, a few went even deeper.

Scouting Report

Looking over the scouting reports, it’s clear to see why Lucas is a legit pro prospect. Lucas is big strong, and has a long reach which makes it hard for pass rushers to get around him. He’s well aware of what he can and can’t do and plays within himself.

His strong athletic base helps him to drive block defenders in the run game. Additionally, he uses outstanding balance to both take his man’s best hit and keep control.

Lucas has an all-around solid game, so there aren’t many weak areas. He’s not the fastest guy around, and his footwork could use some improvement at times. Scouts would also like him to be more consistent as a run blocker.

Draft Prospectus 1.0

Most mock drafts have Lucas as a late second-day, early third-day pick. He has the size and tenacity that can’t be taught. Lucas might not be an immediate starter as a rookie, but in a year or so, his team will come to depend on him.

On the surface, Lucas profiles how you’d expect a tackle who’s played under Rolovich and Mike Leach. As a pass protector, he is excellent — even holding his own against players like Kayvon Thibodeaux.

He has enough athleticism to match most defenders around the edge, and with his strong base and timely extensions, he neutralizes a lot of rushes before they generate any pressure. In a modern NFL, that’s increasingly geared toward the pass, Lucas’ supremely high floor warrants much respect. Ian Cummings, Pro Football Network.
