Washington Huskies head coach Jimmy Lake may have found his successor to Jacob Eason at quarterback. The school announced that Kevin Thompson will join the team as a graduate transfer.

A new head coach with inexperienced quarterbacks and a short time to prepare is a recipe for disaster. Fortunately, first-year Washington Huskies head coach Jimmy Lake found a man with experience to lead his offense. Former Sacramento State QB Kevin Thomson has come into the program as a graduate transfer.

It’s a return home for Thomson. He hails from Auburn, Wa., and attended Auburn Riverside High School. In 2014, the quarterback started his collegiate endeavors at UNLV. He sat out a year as a redshirt before transferring to Sacramento State. It was with the Hornets that Thomson found his groove.

Last season, he threw for 3,216 yards and 27 touchdowns, with an additional 619 yards and 12 scores on the ground. A true dual-threat! As a result, Thomson earned some impressive accolades in the Football Championship Subdivision including:

  • First Team All-Big Sky
  • Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year
  • Phil Steele Second Team All-American
  • Associated Press Third Team All-American
  • Walter Payton Award (top offensive player in FCS) – third place

A much-needed veteran presence

Lake will expect the 25-year-old (that’s not an error, he is 25) to lead a very young quarterback group by example. Until his arrival, the Washington Huskies had three QBs on scholarship. They are sophomore Jacob Sirmon, redshirt freshman Dylan Morris, and true freshman Ethan Garbers. Of the group, Sirmon led the way with three pass attempts as a college quarterback.

Thompson is now in the hunt to be Washington’s starter for the season opener against Michigan. That is if he can stay healthy. The signal-caller has suffered through several serious injuries thus far. As a freshman, he tore an elbow ligament that required surgery. Then, a back injury sidelined him for half of the 2018 season. Finally, he missed a-game-and-a-half with a concussion last year.

As a player with experience, Thomson knows how to keep himself game ready. That means he should be in excellent physical condition, despite the COVID-19 layoff.
