After a hard week off the field, the Washington Huskies host the Pac-12 South Division’s second-place team Arizona State.

Sunday, the Washington Huskies fired offensive coordinator John Donovan after another terrible offensive performance. The next day, head coach Jimmy Lake drew a one-game suspension from athletic director Jennifer Cohen for shoving a Husky player on the sideline. Defensive Coordinator Bob Gregory will coach the team against Arizona State this week.

The Sun Devils are 4-2 record in the Pac-12 South Division. and 6-3 overall. They are 5-1 in Tempe, but fortunately for Washington, 1-2 on the road. Despite ASU’s struggles on the road, the shakeup on Montlake has the Washington Huskies in disarray.

Let’s take a closer look at the Huskies competition this week.

ASU offense

Junior quarterback Jayden Daniels is up and down this season. He completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 1,879 yards and 7 touchdowns. But his success is offset by 7 interceptions, 4 of which came in the last 2 games. The Huskies will have to watch out for Daniels’s scrambling ability. He is second on the team with 482 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Senior Rachaad White is ASU’s top rusher with 685 yards and 12 touchdowns. Last week in the win over USC, White carried the ball 28 times for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns. He is also a threat in the passing game with 29 catches for 286 yards and a touchdown. One other thing, White hasn’t fumbled the ball yet this season, either.

Sophomore DeaMonte Trayanum is the Sun Devils’ second-string running back with 333 yards and 5 touchdowns. He hasn’t caught a lot of balls, only 4 for 19 yards. Their number three running back is freshman Daniyel Ngata, who has 276 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Ricky Pearsall is Arizona State’s most productive receiver. This season, he has 35 receptions for 417 yards and 2 touchdowns. Freshman LV Bunkley-Shelton has the second-most catches, 25, for 357 and 2 TD’s. Tight end Curtis Hodges is next with 17 receptions for a remarkable 344 yards and a score. Andre Johnson and Johnny Wilson each have 12 catches and 1 touchdown each.

ASU Defense

On defense, Arizona State has a veteran defense. They give up the fewest yards per game (328.8) in the Pac-12. Three senior linebackers lead the Sun Devils in tackles. Darien Butler has 60 stops and two sacks along with a team-leading three interceptions. Kyle Soelle is second with 55, one sack, and one interception, followed by Merlin Robertson with 46 and 2 interceptions.

ASU is also second in the conference with 21 sacks. D.J. Davidson leads the pass rush with 3.5 sacks. Tyler Johnson is only a half-sack behind.

History

ASU leads the series 20-13 over Washington. The Huskies, however, won the last meeting on which took place on September 22, 2018. Sean McGrew and Kamari Pleasant played for UW in the game but weren’t a factor. Tight end Cade Otton had 3 catches for 40 yards and a touchdown.
