Washington Huskies Sam Huard named 5th most influential 2021 commit

When quarterback Sam Huard committed to the Washington Huskies for 2021, it was a big deal. Huskies fans may now be getting a better feel about how big it is.

It’s never easy for the staff of a first-time head coach to hit the recruiting trail. For Washington Huskies new Head Coach Jimmy Lake and his assistants, the job became 100 times harder due to the COVID-19 shutdown. There have been no on-campus visits, nor have coaches been able to go on the road and visit recruits in their homes.

So when 2021 five-star quarterback Sam Huard committed to Washington, it was huge for the program. According to The Athletic (subscription required), Huard is the fifth most influential commit in the class. The reasoning is clear.

Currently, 24/7 Sports has Washington ranked 37th overall and third in the Pac 12 for 2021 recruiting. After Huard, the top-ranked pro-style QB in this class, the next highest commit to UW is four-star athlete Will Latu from Bethel High School in Spanaway, WA. The rest of the class is comprised of three-star and under prospects.

So Huard moves the needle for UW’s recruiting class. Both his father Brock Huard and uncle Damon Huard led the Washington Huskies from under center. Sam is the ultimate legacy and pure pocket passer. He can run but prefers to stay calm in the pocket and find a way to make plays with his arm.

Keep in mind, however, that he has been committed to UW since 2018. Huard told Sports Illustrated a couple of months back that he never thought about playing anywhere else. Then again, Chris Peterson was the head coach then, not Lake.

The young QB prospect will have a big target from his class to work with. Heading up the list of three-star commitments is 6-5½, 240-pound, Quenton Moore from Kenmore, WA, who is currently enrolled at Independence Community College (seasons three and four of Netflix’s Last Chance U). The top-ranked tight end in this recruiting class, Moore also has NFL bloodlines. His father, Mark Moore, was a defensive back for the Seattle Seahawks.

Huard may become even more influential once he joins Lake’s team. Washington Huskies fans are excited to find out how good he can be at the next level.
