Check back with us on Sunday for our takeaways from the game. Go Dawgs!!
The Washington Huskies were originally scheduled to take on Washington State this Friday in the Apple Cup. The game was canceled because of Covid-19 concerns with Wazzu’s football team. There was thought on Monday that the Huskies would take on Brigham Young, but the eighth-ranked Cougars took a pass. Fortunately, a replacement team became available.
Tuesday, the Pac-12 announced UW would host Utah. The Utes game against Arizona State was canceled for the same reason as the Apple Cup. Since Utah also an open date, the conference made a match.
The Washington Huskies go into this game with a record of 2–0 after beating Oregon State Beavers on Saturday, November 14, then Arizona 44–7, last Saturday.
In the most recent win, UW featured both the run and pass in a 42–27 win. Arizona was ready for the Huskies’ ground and pound attack, so quarterback Dylan Morris came out firing passes. Wide receiver Puka Nacua scored a touchdown on the Huskies’ first series with a nifty 65-yard catch and run. That scoring play was the beginning of an onslaught.
The Huskies put up points on their first four possessions of the first half while holding their opponents scoreless. By the end of quarter three, Washington held a commanding 37–0 lead. Arizona rallied back against the Huskies’ second string in the fourth quarter, but it was long over by then. UW’s defense had five sacks, including two by Zion Tupuola-Fetui.

Utah played their first game of 2020 last week against USC. The Trojans beat them 33–17. It was a tie game, 10–10, until five minutes into the second quarter. Then Southern Cal poured it on. From then on, the Utes offense couldn’t get out of its own way. USC had most of their success against Utah throwing the ball. Trojans sophomore quarterback Kedon Slovis completing 24 of 35 passes for 264 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.
Even with all the yards, Utah sacked Slovis three times and had seven more tackles for loss. On Tuesday, Utah head coach Kyle Willingham announced starting quarterback Cameron Rising is out for the season with a shoulder injury. Senior Jake Bentley came off of the bench last week and will start against Washington. Bentley completed 16 of 28 for 171 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
U-dub’s defense will look to shut down the Utes passing game with their talented secondary. Additionally, the Huskies’ defensive line will try to rattle Bentley with steady pressure.
Due to the late switch, Washington head coach Jimmy Lake and offensive coordinator didn’t have a lot of time to plan for Utah specifically. It will be interesting to see whether the Washington Huskies will come out running or throwing against Utah. Whatever the case should be an interesting game for the Huskies in their third outing of the season
