Interesting Trends: The Washington Huskies have won 5 of their last 8 games overall and 16 of 20 at Husky Stadium. However, they covered only once in the previous six opportunities. UW has also gone under in the last 7 of 9 times they played as the favorite.

The Red Wolves had a rough time of late. They are 2-6 in the last 8 games and 1-7 in their previous 8 road games. The under looks like a good play, and A-State’s been below the number in 15 of 20 as an underdog.

Last Game

Washington 10 – Michigan 31

Maybe Huskies fans didn’t expect a win last week at Ann Arbor, but they sure didn’t think UW would have such a lackluster outing. Michigan got out to a 17-0 lead before Washington finally kicked a field goal with 5:54 left in the third quarter.

Although UW quarterback Dylan Morris threw for 293 yards, rarely did the offense show much rhythm. Receiver Tyrell Bynam was one of the few Huskies’ offensive standouts with 5 receptions, 115 yards, and a touchdown. Linebacker Eddie Ulofoshio had 14 tackles and was all over the field making stops.

Memphis 55 – Arkansas State 50

The Red Wolves gave Memphis all they could handle last week, putting up 680 yards of offense and 50 points. Trailing 48-30 after three quarters of action, A-State scored three touchdowns in the final period to close the gap. Quarterbacks James Blackman and Layne Hatcher combined to complete 42 of 66 passes for 582 yards and 5 TDs with no interceptions. Receiver Jeff Forman led the skill players with 198 yards and a touchdown on 8 receptions.

Outlook

It’s hard to believe that this is a must-win game for the Washington Huskies. No one thought they would start 0-2 (including a loss to Montana) after a preseason Number 20 ranking. Now they find themselves with their backs against the wall facing a team who can score almost at will.

To say UW’s offense has been sluggish was sluggish the first two games is a huge understatement. The Huskies scored a total of 17 points in two games while gaining 614 yards of total offense.

Their inability to run the ball (115 total yards) is even more confusing, considering Washington has experience on the offensive line. Maybe seniors Sean McGrew and Kamari Pleasant could get some touches to jump-start the run game.

There may not be a team better equipped to defend against A-State’s wide-open offense than the Huskies. UW is talented and deep in the defensive backfield. They can cover almost anyone. Additionally, although they haven’t shown it yet, the Huskies have talented pass rushers.

The Washington Huskies might not cover the 17 point spread, but they should win. That would be the first step in turning around a thus far dismal season.
