October begins our monthly series on Washington Huskies football recruiting. Let’s look at who the Huskies signed to the Class of 2022.

Once a month, we will look at the Washington Huskies football team’s incoming recruits. We will see who has committed, those they are considering, and those who decided to go elsewhere. The new era, where a player can transfer once without missing a season, makes recruiting even more interesting. Then there are the players who de-commit before ever showing up on campus.

Recruiting areas

For Washington, the most essential part of recruiting is to have the top players in Washington state stay home. They have an impressive success record of keeping in-state talent, but you can’t blame players for going elsewhere to seek other opportunities. What they don’t want to do is lose someone to Oregon.

California is the next best hotbed to bring in prospects. Also, the Huskies usually find a player or two from Texas, where football rules. Recruiting in Oregon, Utah, Colorado, and Arizona is a must to see if they can take away someone from another school in the Pac-12. Those schools most likely get the top players from their state, too. But still, someone may want to leave as well.

The recruiting class of 2022

So far, the Huskies have ten commits for 2022. Out of those ten, four are from Washington. So far, the top in-state commit is Ryan Otton out of Tumwater, younger brother of Huskies All-American tight end Cade Otton. With Cade going to the NFL next year, bringing in his younger brother makes sense. Ryan committed at the end of July. He is a four-star player and in ESPN’s 300.

The Huskies landed another player from ESPN’s top 300 the same day in Germie Bernard. The wide receiver from Henderson, Nevada, was heavily recruited by three other Pac-12 schools, Arizona State, Oregon, and Utah. He also passed offers from Michigan, Nebraska, and nearby UNLV, among others. This was a good pickup for the program.

The other three commits from Washington include four-star wide receiver Denzel Boston from Emerald Ridge High School in South Hill. UW also landed a pair of three-star recruits, Vega Loane of Graham-Kapowsin High School and tight end Chance Bogan from Lincoln High School in Tacoma.

The Washington Huskies’ other five commits are from out of state. They are running back Emeka Megwa out of Fort Worth, Texas, guard Parker Brailford from Scottsdale, Arizona; defensive end Lance Holtzclaw of Mesa, Arizona; TJ Hall, a wide receiver out of Fresno, California; and Jackson Stratton from La Jolla, California, who plays quarterback. Megwa and Brailford are four-star recruits, while the others rank as three-stars.

The downside

Ben Roberts, a defensive tackle out of Utah in mid-August, announced he was de-committing from Washington. On September 5, Roberts announced he was Oregon-bound. Until signing day, Roberts could change his mind, again. UW lost a local recruit, Mark Nabou, an offensive lineman out of O’Dea High School back in June. As of now, he hasn’t committed to another school. Two other players had de-committed before Nabou did as well.

Next month we will look at any new commits, along with 14 players the Huskies are recruiting from the ESPN top 300. Word is out the Huskies likely will have a class of 17 players for next year. Go Dawgs!
