There has been quite a bit of turnover since Kalen DeBoer became the new Washington Huskies head coach. Here’s a look at the recent changes.

It’s a new era at Montlake since Kalen DeBoer became the Washington Huskies head coach on December 29. DeBoer has plenty of work to do in rebuilding the Huskies program back to prominence. As UW starts the 2022 calendar year, we look at some of the recent arrivals and departures.

Out

December 16 – DL Sam Taimani

Defensive lineman Sam Taimani played in 25 games over the last four seasons, including 14 starts. He’s more of a run stopper than a pass rusher but didn’t make the impact that was expected when he came to UW in 2018. Last season he made 43 tackles. Rumors have him headed to Baylor.

December 17 – LB Anthony Ward

Walk-on Anthony Ward didn’t see any action with the Washington Huskies. Maybe he gets a chance to play at a smaller school.

December 23 – WR Terrell Bynum (Southern California)

New USC coach Lincoln Riley got an early Christmas present when standout wide receiver Terrell Bynum announced his transfer to the Trojans. When he wasn’t battling injuries, Bynum was a starter the last three years. He leaves Washington with 65 receptions for 934 yards and 6 touchdowns.

December 29 – LB Jackson Sirmon

Jackson Sirmon played in every game the last three seasons. In 2021, he started all 12 games last season and led the Huskies with 91 tackles, including 4 for loss. For his outstanding performance, Sirmon earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention. Losing the Brentwood, TN native is as big of a loss to the defense as Bynum is to the offense.

In

December 15 – CB Jordan Perryman (UC Davis)

An FCS third-team All-American, Jordan Perryman, joins the Washington Huskies from UC Davis. Last season he had 45 tackles, 10 passes defended, and an interception for the Aggies. Perryman should help ease the departures of Trent McDuffie and Kyler Gordon, both of who will be in the NFL next season.

The revolving door of assistant coaches

The Washington Huskies added more assistant coaches to their staff. They all came from Fresno State after the Bulldogs beat UTEP in the New Mexico Bowl. When DeBoer was hired, it rang a familiar bell to when Chris Petersen first became UW’s head coach.

In 2018 Jimmy Lake and Pete Kwiatkowski were co-defensive coordinators. DeBoer’s staff will have William Inge (linebackers) and Chuck Morrell (safeties) as co-defensive coordinators. Lee Marks, who was interim head coach at Fresno State after DeBoer’s departure, will be UW’s running backs coach. Eric Schmidt takes over as defensive line and special teams coach. Finally, Ron McKeefery is the new strength and conditioning coach.

It looked like the Washington Huskies were retaining popular wide receivers coach Junior Adams. Instead, Adams announced that he was going to the University of Oregon on New Year’s Day. Losing Adams is tough because he’s an excellent recruiter. The question will the Huskies lose any receivers to the Ducks as well.
