Washington Huskies alumni in the NFL – 2020 wrap up: AFC East
This year there were 36 Washington Huskies alumni in the NFL. PNWS takes a division by division look at how they fared. We continue with the AFC East.
The Washington Huskies have been a dependable supplier of talent to the professional ranks. This year, 36 University of Washington alumni were part of NFL Rosters. Pacific Northwest Sports reviews their performance this season, division by division. Today it’s Huskies alumni playing in the AFC East.
New York Jets
The New York Jets ended up with a 2-14 record. Maybe their season was so poor because they had no Washington Huskies on their roster. Just an observation.
Buffalo Bills
Trey Adams’ college career started with a great deal of promise. Unfortunately, an ACL injury followed by back problems cost him the 2018 and 2019 seasons. He went from a potential high round draft pick to an undrafted free agent. He signed with the Buffalo Bills and spent the season on their practice squad.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins have two running backs from UW, Myles Gaskin, and rookie Salvon Ahmed. Miami drafted Gaskin in 2019’s seventh round. He started the season as a third-stringer, but injuries to Jordan Howard and Matt Breida led to Gaskin becoming Miami’s starter in Week 3.
Gaskin wasn’t immune to injuries either. The running back hurt his knee in Game 7, causing him to miss five weeks. His breakout came in Game 15 against Las Vegas. Against the Raiders, Gaskin had 87 yards rushing along with five catches for 82 yards and a pair of touchdowns. For the season, Myles Gaskin had 972 yards from scrimmage and five scores.
Salvon Ahmed declared for the NFL after his junior year of 2019. He wasn’t drafted and signed with San Francisco as a free agent. Released by the Niners in training camp, Ahmed was fortunate enough to sign with Miami as a member of the practice squad. The same injuries that made Gaskin a starter also cleared room for Ahmed on the main roster.
He finished the year with 319 yards and three touchdowns on 75 carries. Ahmed’s big game was during a win against the New England Patriots in Game 14. The Kirkland, Washington native gained 122 rushing yards for an average of 5.1-per-carry and scored a touchdown.
New England Patriots
This year the New England Patriots missed the playoffs for the first time since forever or before Tom Brady. On the plus side, New England had former UW defensive back, Myles Bryant. The one-time Washington Huskies star signed with the Pats as an undrafted free agent in 2020.
Like Ahmed, Bryant began the season on the practice squad and worked his way up to the main roster. He ended up playing in nine games. For his rookie season, Bryant had nine tackles and an interception.
