Sunday is the end of the line for these 10 Seattle Seahawks

Sunday is game day, but Monday, the business of football takes over. That’s why Game 17 will be the end of the line for these 10 Seattle Seahawks pending free agents.

NFL football is a business. If anyone forgets that Black Monday will be a sobering reminder when between three and six head coaches get fired. It’s also the end of the season for 18 teams, including the Seattle Seahawks.

This is a double-digit loss team, so there is plenty of room for improvement and personnel upgrades. To make room, these 10 pending free agents won’t be back in the Emerald City for 2022.

This article isn’t about Russell Wilson or Bobby Wagner. They have contracts and aren’t leaving unless they want to go. It isn’t about practice squad quality players such as John Ursua either.

One last thing, Seattle should do what it takes to bring back pending UFA safety Quandre Diggs, even if it means tagging him. For the rest of these players, hey, it’s a business.

The nearly departed

Duane Brown, LT

Last summer Duane Brown wanted a contract extension. He pushed to the point where he limited his participation in training camp. Brown didn’t deserve an extension then, and he doesn’t deserve one now. Besides his ticked off with the organization about it and wouldn’t resign in Seattle anyway.

Brandon Shell, RT

The only thing worse than the oft-injured Brandon Shell playing right tackle was whoever the Seahawks replaced him with. That is until Jake Curhan showed up as an undrafted free agent and played just as well, if not better than Shell.

Jamarco Jones, OL

See Brandon Shell. Seriously, Jamarco Jones has looked uninspired (or overmatched) since Seattle drafted him in 2019.

Gerald Everett, TE

It was only going to be a one-year marriage when the Seattle Seahawks signed him to a $6M contract for 2021. They might have overpaid; Gerald Everett caught 47 passes for 487 yards and 4 TDs going into the final game. Everett never had the breakout performance; he always seemed on the brink of pulling off.

Geno Smith, QB

While Russell Wilson was out for three games with a finger injury, Geno Smith proved the Seahawks couldn’t trust him to run the offense with any consistency. If someone as bad as Mike Glennon can find an NFL job, another team will sign Geno as a backup.

Alex Collins, RB

A pleasant surprise, Alex Collins played well enough to make people forget about losing bell-cow back Chris Carson (again). He’s earned a nice raise for 2022. Unfortunately, it won’t be in Seattle.

Rashaad Penny, RB

In the last four games, Rashaad Penny ran the ball 69 times for 481 yards (6.97 YPC) and five touchdowns. It’s a shame that the former first-round pick couldn’t stay healthy or show the talent and production over the last four seasons as he did in the last four games. The Seattle Seahawks already declined his fifth-year option, and he’ll walk away in free agency.

Penny Hart, WR

Give credit to the diminutive receiver he stuck around for two seasons as an undrafted free agent after getting cut by Indianapolis. In 29 games over two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, Penny Hart caught 8 passes for 62 yards.

Robert Nkemdiche, DT

In three NFL stops over five seasons, Robert Nkemdiche hasn’t done anything to show why Arizona thought enough of his potential to use a 2016 first-round pick on him. Seattle picked off the scrap heap before the season, and he’ll be back there after it.

Rasheem Green. DE

Rasheem Greem had almost as many sacks this year (6.5) as he did in the previous three years combined (7.0). It will be enough to get him a nice raise for 2022. With Kerry Hyder, Carlos Dunlap, Darrell Taylor, and Benson Mayowa on the roster, he’s not a priority for the Seahawks. Another team will sign him based on this season’s production.

Honorable Mention – L.J. Collier, DE

The Seattle Seahawks’ 2019 first-round pick has been disappointing, to say the least. He’s not a free agent, but GM John Schneider will trade L.J. Collier before the 2022 draft for whatever he can get (likely a sixth or seventh-round pick.
