Seattle Seahawks Dud and Stud of Game 14 vs. SF 49ers

By Andrew Elderbaum

The Seattle Seahawks fell behind San Francisco by 18 points early in the third quarter. A late game rally wasn’t enough to catch up. Here are our Dud and Stud of the game.

The Lumen Field crowd was fired up for Thursday Night Football against NFC West-leading San Francisco. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to inspire their Seattle Seahawks to victory.

One minute into the third quarter, the Seahawks fell behind 21-3 after Niners tight end broke several tackles en route to a 54 yard score. Seattle scored the game’s final 10 points, but it wasn’t enough. They lost 21-13.

As 12s begin the wailing and gnashing of teeth following Seattle’s stink bomb on Thursday, cooler heads should prevail. The Seahawks lost to a better team and a superior defense. To lose a one score game against a Super Bowl contender is not the debacle some people think it is.

No team has scored more than 17 against San Francisco in 6 games, and the Dolphins were blown out by them a week earlier. While a win would have been great, this wasn’t a bad loss. Seattle hung in there and had a shot at winning the game.

On to the Studs and Duds.

Second Dishonorable Mention: D.K. Metcalf

The second dishonorable mention goes to D.K. Metcalf. Is it possible to have a game where he isn’t flagged for being a 5-year-old? I get there’s emotion and adrenalin on the field, but I don’t see Tyler Lockett having slap fights with defensive backs every week.

On a night where Metcalf was held to 55 yards and out of the end zone, he gave back 15 yards for nonsense. D.K. got the big contract; he should be one of the leaders on the team. It’s enough, man.

First Dishonorable Mention: Seattle Seahawks secondary

This was a group effort, so I’m giving it to the Seahawks secondary. Quandre Diggs dropped what could have been a game-saving interception and seemed to be taking poor angles on his tackles all night.

Miscommunication and blown assignments resulted in two of the 49ers touchdowns. Their tackling was horrific, and the execution was poor.

As a whole, the Seattle Seahawks defense tackled poorly, and right now looks like the reason Seattle may not make the playoffs.

Dud of the week: Travis Homer

Dud number one has to be Travis Homer. His fumble right before halftime effectively put the game out of reach.

There is a huge difference between 7-3 and 14-3 against the stingy San Francisco defense. Factoring in mediocre production the rest of the game, Homer was clearly a key culprit in the loss.

Second Honorable Mention: Godwin Igwebuike

While only involved in a handful of plays, the second honorable mention goes to Godwin Igwebuike. He averaged almost 30 yards per kick return and almost broke one for a touchdown. While not a “studly” effort, Igwebuike definitely merits mention.

First Honorable Mention: Geno Smith

The first honorable mention will draw the ire of some, but I’m going with Geno Smith. While not his best statistical game, Smith hung in against a hellacious pass rush to keep the Seattle Seahawks in this game.

Smith’s 238 yards and a touchdown against San Francisco are nothing to sneeze at. Yes he had a sure interception dropped, but at the end of the day, he was Seattle’s best offensive player.

Stud of the Week: Jason Myers

The stud this week is Jason Myers. His phenomenal season continued Thursday night.

Myers was perfect during the game, including a 51-yarder in the third quarter. He’s been the best kicker in the NFL this year, evidenced by his 26/27 on field goals and 37/38 on extra points. Additionally, Myers has made all 6 of his 50 yard tries.

So there you have it, the best and worst that the Seattle Seahawks had to offer on a rough night. It’s going to be a rough schedule over the next few weeks, so let’s see if Seattle is up for the challenge.
