Seattle Seahawks: Re-sign D.K. Metcalf before it’s too Late
The Seattle Seahawks are currently getting trade calls on their young star wide receiver. At this point, they are not soliciting these calls. They should extend him before it’s too late.
The Seattle Seahawks are going through a makeover this year, moving away from franchise icons Bobby Wagner and Russell Wilson. Lately, there have been rumors about the team trading away Tyler Lockett. However, nothing has materialized to this point. Moreover, the team has come out and said they’re not interested in trading away D.K. Metcalf.
They also said something similar about Wilson, too. And we saw how that turned out. That’s why so many NFL GMs are calling the Seattle Seahawks about trading for Metcalf.
Right now, it’s reported the Seahawks are not entertaining any talk on Metcalf. They simply say “no thank you” to trade offers. For all 12s out there, this is good news. Conventional thinking is that the sides will agree on a contract extension. The question is when.
Why All the Comotion?
The Seattle Seahawks appear to be in no rush to re-sign Metcalf. His current contract expires after the 2022 season. That leaves Seattle all of the upcoming year to get a deal done. Here is why they should get a contract extension done prior to then.
Metcalf has an up and down career so far. In two out of three seasons, he’s finished under 1,000 yards receiving, averaging 56.3, and 56.9 yards per game. In the other season, he went over 1,300 yards receiving (81.4 yards per game). His career average is 64.7.
Is Metcalf Worth It?
Just about every contract is created with the idea of rewarding a player for his past accomplishments. Not for what his future will be. Metcalf turns 25 this year and should have another decade of top-notch football in front of him.
Spotrac estimates Metcalf’s market value is $24.2 million per season and that he’ll sign a four-year deal totaling $97,185,816. It’s not an overpayment thinking of it from that viewpoint. And even at that dollar amount per year, he still wouldn’t be the highest-paid receiver. He’d be fourth on the list behind older players DeAndre Hopkins, Davante Adams, and Tyreek Hill.
Is Metcalf at that same level of talent as those guys? Yes, absolutely he is. Metcalf is bigger than all three of them and second fastest to Hill.
He has the talent to put up similar numbers to all of them. And quite honestly, if Metcalf has a stellar 2022 season, he could be in line for an even bigger payday.

Pay that man his money
A stellar season for Metcalf doesn’t seem possible with Drew Lock as the Seahawks’ starting quarterback. However, with the Seattle Seahawks expected to lose more games than they win this year, maybe Metcalf can put up garbage time stats. Stats are stats, and it doesn’t matter if they’re put up in garbage time or not.
Regardless, Seattle should look to re-sign Metcalf sooner rather than later. Right now, they might be able to get Metcalf a little cheaper than expected due to the volatility at the beginning of his NFL career.
