Seattle Seahawks must pay Ravens price for Orlando Brown
A long-term solution for the Seattle Seahawks offensive line may have presented itself recently. Orlando Brown Jr. could be the Seahawks’ left tackle for the next decade.
The Seattle Seahawks have many needs to address this offseason, and very little cap space or draft picks to fill them. GM John Schneider certainly has his work cut out for him. Schneider will once again need to pull off some magic.
It’s no secret the Seahawks offensive line isn’t very good. It could get worse; two spots are open due to either free agency or retirement. One is manned by a 36-year-old with knee issues., A fourth spot is held by someone who can’t stay on the field and, when he does, can’t poss block.
Add to that quarterback Russell Wilson‘s growing frustration over his lack of protection. Plus, the Seahawks lack of resources, and it’s a recipe for disaster is brewing.
A long term solution
The Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Orlando Brown Jr. recently tweeted, “I’m a LEFT tackle.” For those that aren’t aware, Brown ended the year as the Ravens starting left tackle. After Ronnie Stanley hurt his ankle five games into the year, Brown Jr. took over as the replacement. When Stanley is healthy, he is one of the top LT’s in football, and Brown Jr. is the Ravens starting right tackle.
I’m a LEFT Tackle.

It’s not very often that a right tackle can move over to the left side and not be a liability for both the team and the line. According to Pro Football Focus, Brown Jr played at a high level. He gave up no sacks or quarterback hits in his 700 snaps at left tackle. That’s outstanding, and the kind of protection Wilson wants in front of him.
Here’s an idea that’s a win-win, an ever-elusive result in the NFL. ESPN’s Baltimore Ravens writer, Jamison Hensley, recently wrote a piece about Orlando Brown and possible outcomes because of his tweet. The Seahawks pull a page out of the LA Rams playbook and send future high-round draft picks to the Baltimore Ravens for Orlando Brown Jr.
The Seahawks already have a Brown playing left tackle, Duane, so they need to find some solutions. There are three scenarios to make adding Orlando Brown work.
Scenario 1
Carroll sits down with Duane Brown and asks him to move to right tackle for the upcoming season. The left tackle job goes to Orlando, and Duane can finish out his Seahawks career on the right side. Unlikely given the $10M, Duane is due in 2021, and the Seahawks limited cap space.
Scenario 2
Let O. Brown play the right side in 2021 with a promise to move him left when D. Brown’s contract expires at the end of the season. A nice raise and extension, beginning with 2022, from Carroll and Schneider that lets Orlando know he’s their future left tackle seals the deal. Duane rides into the sunset after a final season watching RW3’s back.
Scenario 3
Seattle sends Duane, and a high day three draft pick to Baltimore for Orlando. Duane is then the backup plan for Stanley if there’s a setback in his recovery. Otherwise, he plays the right side. The Ravens could use his leadership. They also get an additional draft pick. For the Seahawks, there are many benefits to this deal, but two stand out. They get a younger left tackle who could become a franchise player, as well as some much-needed cap relief for 2021.
The O-line rebuild began last year with Damien Lewis at right guard. Adding Orlando Brown and another lineman with the 56th overall pick in this year’s makes it 60 percent. Schneider can complete the task with a key signing this offseason and another draft pick in 2022. Until then, either Jordan Simmons, Brandon Shell, and/or Phil Haynes fills out the line.
