Seattle Seahawks overreactions to win over New York Giants
The Seattle Seahawks beat the New York Giants this week. Seattle sits atop NFC West by a full game. Their surprising season continues. This week the Seahawks got a pleasant surprise from an unlikely source.
The Seattle Seahawks hosted the New York football Giants on Sunday. It was a battle between two potential playoff teams. Also, two teams no one anticipated would be contending for the postseason.
It was a hard-hitting, pad-pooping affair which the Seahawks won 27-13. Their magical season continues.
It’s funny to laugh at everyone who thought this team would struggle this season. Boy, were we all wrong. In this case, being wrong is a wonderful thing. I will gladly be wrong like this all the time. Time to dive into this week’s overreactions.
In Geno Smith we trust
Yeah, that’s a thing now. Crazy to think, but it really is a thing. Go back two months and ask yourself if those words would leave your lips and you were serious about it. Geno Smith had another efficient day at the office, completing 67% of his passes for 212 yards and 2 touchdowns.
It is just amazing how well Smith has this offense working. He’s playing into exactly how Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron designed the system for him; and how Russell Wilson thinks he plays.
Moving up the rankings
With this Seattle Seahawks win, Pete Carroll moves up into a tie for 18th on the All-Time NFL Head Coach Wins list, with Bud Grant at 158 wins. Grant is Carroll’s mentor, so it is pretty special for him.
Up next on the list for him to pass is former Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren (161). If Carroll decides to continue coaching next season, he may pass Mike Shanahan, Bill Parcells, Tom Coughlin, and Jeff Fisher. This would put him 12th on the list.
Where has this defense been hanging out all season?
So, a fun fact for everyone, the Seahawks’ offense has scored the second most points in the NFL with 210. The only team to score more than them is Kansas City. Smith and company are putting up points like they were Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
On the flip side, Seattle’s defense ranks 28th. However, this week the Seattle Seahawks held New York to a total of 147-yards passing, 78-yards rushing, and only 13 first downs (14 if you count the one they got from a penalty).
Then there was the Seahawks’ pass rush. They sacked Daniel Jones 5 times.
The defense also made some big hits. For example, Bruce Irvin shoved Daniel Jones into Saquon Barkley to knock Barkley down for a loss. And cornerback Mike Jackson delivered a big hit to Tanner Hudson at the end of the game.
If this is how Seattle’s defense will play for the remainder of the season, then the NFL needs to be on alert.
Let’s also give some props to the Seattle Seahawks punt coverage squad. The unit forced and recovered two fumbles, which the offense turned into 10 points.
The Seattle Seahawks are cruising along on a three-game win streak. Their next opponent is on the road in the desert in Arizona. It will be a tough test, as the Cardinals will be looking for some revenge for a loss earlier in the season.
However, after watching this team for eight weeks, I’m not seeing any team that scares me.
