Seattle Seahawks: Overreactions from Game 2 loss to San Francisco

The Seattle Seahawks came crashing back down to Earth in Game 2. Sunday was the complete opposite of their opener. Let’s overreact to this game.

The Seattle Seahawks‘ hopes of going undefeated came crashing down this week. And not only that, San Francisco finally beat Seattle for the first time since 2019. During that time, the Seahawks have gone 5-1 since the two teams split their series.

The good news is that the Seattle Seahawks still sit atop the NFC West. Even if all the teams in the division have the same record of 1-1. Atlanta is next on the schedule, which is 0-2 on the season. So Seattle will be looking to get back into the win column.

Penny for your thoughts

Rashaad Penny was utterly ineffective in this game, rushing six times for 15-yards. His longest run on the day was a 6-yard scamper. For a team that wants to pound the rock, they only ran the ball 14 times for 36 scoreless yards.

This running game needs to get back on track in a hurry if the Seattle Seahawks hope to win another game. They can’t have performances like this again.

He is who we thought he is

After last week’s victory, Geno Smith had a cute line “they wrote me off, and I didn’t write back.” Well, days like Sunday are the reason everyone wrote him off.

Smith went 24 of 30 for 197-yards, one interception, and got sacked twice. It’s amazing that he threw the ball 30 times and couldn’t throw hit 200-yards. Although, to be fair, he averaged 6.6 yards per throw.

If he continues to average such short passes, this offense is going to be absolute trouble all season long. The Seattle Seahawks want to run the ball. However, everyone knows this fact, and if the passing game can’t keep opponents honest, there will be more results like this week.

Enjoy the wins when they come; there won’t be many of them

As previously mentioned, up next for the Seattle Seahawks is a home game against Atlanta. After that, they’ll travel to Detroit. Then their next eight games will be against opponents who have legit aspirations of making the playoffs and making a run at the Super Bowl.

So, while the Seattle Seahawks could be 3-1 when they travel to New Orleans, nobody should expect the Seahawks to be as good as their record could indicate. This week was an ice bucket challenge reminder of how bad this team is.

There are some pieces to be excited about. But, unfortunately, the overall sum of the parts is not a good one.

Seattle will be absolutely lucky to win a maximum of six games. They are more likely to lose their remaining games and get the number one overall draft selection than to win again. Winter is coming, and it’s going to be a very long, cold one.
