Contenders to be next Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator

The Seattle Seahawks are on the hunt for a new offensive coordinator. Here is a look at some of the people in contention.

Brian Schottenheimer’s tenure with the Seattle Seahawks has ended. It’s currently being debated amongst fans if the collapse of the offense in the second half of the 2020 season is due to Schottenheimer or head coach Pete Carroll. Regardless, this position needs to be filled.

The big-name “front runners” or at the very least have been linked to the opening are Doug Pederson (formerly the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles) and Anthony Lynn (formerly the head coach of the LA Chargers). Pederson is probably a long shot, being a former Super Bowl winner. When the hard times arrive in the season and Carroll makes a suggestion for the offense, will Pederson listen? Could he say, “I’ve won a super bowl before, so I know what I’m doing?”

Lynn did a fairly good job in LA, especially when you consider the less than ideal situations the team endured the last couple of years. Melvin Gordon‘s holdout. Derwin James and Tyrod Taylor‘s injuries. Inserting the sixth overall pick into the starting lineup minutes before the start of their Week 2 game.

Both Pederson and Lynn can be considered for the remaining open head coach roles: Detroit Lions, LA Chargers (not Lynn obviously), Philadelphia Eagles (not Pederson obviously), and Houston Texans. Tony Elliott, Mike McDaniel, Darrell Bevell, Pep Hamilton, and Shane Steichen are some of the names Schner can consider.

Tony Elliott

The hot college coordinator from Clemson. We’ve seen what Trevor Lawrence has done with Elliott’s offense. Now, imagine Russell Wilson doing that. Oh, baby!

Adam Gase

He’s available. He’s looking to rebound after his last two miserable head coaching jobs. The only time he was any good was when Hall of Famer Peyton Manning was his QB. Maybe, just maybe Russell Wilson can make Gase football smart again. Personally, Schneider and Carroll should not consider Gase at all. If they do then we all need to submit our applications for the OC role.

Mike McDaniel

If Pete is serious about running the ball more in 2021, McDaniel is a great pick. Currently, he’s the run game coordinator in San Francisco. In 2019 the 49ers finished second in rushing yards and first in rushing touchdowns. Also, this pulls from a division rival too. A division rival who also just lost their defensive coordinator.

Pep Hamilton/Shane Steichen

Lumping these two together as they are both responsible for the development of Rookie of the Year Justin Herbert. Hamilton also has OC experience from his days with the Colts and Andrew Luck.

Darrell Bevell

This may be the most surprising to see. But who knows Russ and Pete the best? Bevell does, and he helped deliver the 2014 Lombardi Trophy to the Emerald City. Also, the Seahawks finished in the top six in scoring every single year from 2012-2016. Add in the better receivers of D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, and Bevell’s offense can really let Russ cook while keeping Pete happy.

Whoever gets this job, has a big challenge ahead of him reconciling a coach who wants to run and a quarterback who wants to throw.
