Seattle Seahawks need to pursue Marcus Cannon

Recently, Houston cut tackle Marcus Cannon. He’s a player who could help the Seattle Seahawks fill a big hole.

The Seattle Seahawks need some quality offensive tackles. The free-agent market has a few good options out there, and now it just got another interesting one, Marcus Cannon Yes, the three-time Super Bowl-winning starting right tackle is a salary cap casualty.

How does that saying go again, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”? Before you softies start coming at me saying I’m calling Cannon trash, I’m not.

Cannon just happens to have been on a team that is tearing it down to the studs. Houston’s change of direction is some possible good fortune for the Seattle Seahawks, a team that doesn’t have any NFL starting quality tackles.

A complete tackle, Cannon spent nine seasons protecting Tom Brady in New England. He was traded to Houston last season but it didn’t pan out well for him. A back injury limited Cannon to just four games last season. However he opted out of the 2020 COVID season, so he should be well rested.

Almost anyone has to be an upgrade for Seattle over Brandon Shell. Without Duane Brown, the Seahawks could use a veteran leader on the line. Also, it could only help to have someone on the team with a championship pedigree.

Their new quarterback, Drew Lock or Jacob Eason, will more than likely be asked not to hurt the team. They should keep the turnovers down and not put the offense in bad situations. Maybe even make plays when they are there. He’ll need a little help first.

Offensive Line Help

It’s very important the Seattle Seahawks invest in some upgrades for their offensive line. They’ve done so recently by signing free-agent center Austin Blythe. That move now upgrades the middle of the O-line and makes life a little bit easier for guards Gabe Jackson and Damien Lewis. Adding Cannon will make life even easier for Lewis and the rest of the offensive line.

A Bridge to More Free Agents

Shoring up the offensive line would also aid the Seattle Seahawks in building the team first before going after a difference-making quarterback. The free agent quarterback class of 2023 has Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Nick Foles.

Also, Aaron Rodgers just lost his top receiving target, and he has voiced his frustration to Green Bay management. After filling some important holes, the Seahawks would be in position to pull off a big trade for Rodgers in the 2023 off-season? My crystal ball broke, and I can’t see that far, but I can confidently say it starts with improving their offensive line.
