Seattle Seahawks: It’s almost December and still no Josh Gordon
Monday, the Seattle Seahawks play their 11th game of 2020. Despite signing suspended wide receiver Josh Gordon before the season started, there is no word on his reinstatement.
Every team, no matter how good, can use a little “Flash” on their roster. The Seattle Seahawks have Flash, but he can’t get on the field.
On September 3, the Seahawks signed wide receiver Josh “Flash” Gordon to a one-year contract. They did so with the full knowledge that the troubled receiver was suspended indefinitely for the umpteenth time by the NFL on December 16, 2019, for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.
Gordon applied for reinstatement in June. The original thought was he could be back sometime around mid-season. Here we are in Week 12 of the season, and there hasn’t been a peep out of the NFL about the situation.
Some may think, what’s the big deal? Seattle already had the most dangerous receiving tandem in the league, with Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf. Not only that, but David Moore is one of the top third receivers. Moreover, rookie Freddie Swain is developing into a reliable wideout.
It’s also possible that speedster Phillip Dorsett, who had surgery a few weeks ago for bone sours in his foot, could be back by the end of the regular season. Then there is the Seattle Seahawks deep pool of tight ends,
So again, why is getting Josh Gordon on the team a big deal? Well, adding the former All-Pro and Super Bowl champion could be the difference between very good and great. Very good teams don’t win Super Bowls. Great teams do, or at least it makes the task easier.
Still Waiting
The last time Pete Carroll addressed the situation was almost a month ago. According to Joe Fann of NBC Sports Northwest, the head coach was just as clueless about it as the rest of us.
“We really don’t know and don’t have contact to speak of,” he said. “We don’t know any more than you do at this point. We’re just waiting it out for word from the league, unfortunately.”
An important thing to keep in mind is that if Gordon is reinstated, he needs to go through COVID-19 intake. As recently shown by Carlos Dunlap, that process could take over a week. Even if he is allowed back into the league, depending on the day Gordon gets to team headquarters; it could take another two weeks for him to be activated.
Gordon has burned opportunity after opportunity, and frankly, the NFL doesn’t owe him anything. Leaving the guy in limbo for six months is ridiculous. If there is no chance he can play this year, Roger Goodell or one of his minions should just say so. At least then the Seattle Seahawks and Gordon himself can move on and prepare for 2021.
