Seattle Seahawks in a tough spot with only four draft picks

With only four picks in the draft and none in the top 50, the Seattle Seahawks scouting staff has their work cut out for them in the offseason.

The 2021 NFL Draft is a little over three months away. Who will the Seattle Seahawks take with their first pick? That’s hard to say right now. Seattle has 29 pending free agents. Prioritizing who they draft, and at which positions is a huge challenge.

Due to the Jamal Adams trade, the Seahawks don’t have a first-round pick. They don’t get on the clock until pick number 55. Seahawks General Manager Schneider can still get impact talent here. The pick must be a success, but there is a reason why whoever they select wasn’t among the Top 50. Seattle also traded their third-round pick in the Adams deal, which means their second selection is in round four, number 120 overall. With only four picks this year, the margin for error is very slim. FYI, the team’s 2021 seventh-round pick went to Cincinnati for Carlos Dunlap.

2020 Draft

Last year’s second-day picks fall under the “too early to tell” category. Second rounder Darrell Taylor never took the field due to surgery before the draft. He had a titanium rod put in his leg. On the bright side, Taylor was close to playing when the Seahawks were eliminated in the NFC Wild Card Round. Had the season lasted longer, he might have made an appearance. Right guard Damien Lewis, selected in round three, started from the opening snap last season. He had his moments but was also inconsistent. Still, it’s his job.

Only first-round pick Jordyn Brooks made any noticeable impact. Brooks looks like he’ll be in the Emerald City for a long time. Among the day three picks, co-fourth rounders, running back Deejay Dallas, and tight end Colby Parkinson were minimally effective. Both had a strong group of veterans ahead of them.

Edge rusher Alton Robinson, chosen in round five, didn’t make much of a dent either. Sixth-round pick Freddie Swain worked his way into the wide receiver rotation. He has a shot at replacing pending free agent David Morre as the Seattle Seahawks third receiver.

Unless Schneider pulls off some trades to acquire more picks, he won’t be able to address many of the team’s thin areas.
