Seattle Seahawks: Has Russell Wilson already checked out?

By Chris Phillips

Seattle Seahawks Russell Wilson came back from a finger injury. However, was it the correct move on his part?

I never thought I’d ever say an injured Colt McCoy is better than an injured Russell Wilson. This is the world we live in now, and I think I’m going to be sick and not like this new world. Wilson showed off his strong connection with Tyler Lockett, who was, without a doubt, the Seattle Seahawks‘ best offensive weapon.

Wilson fared better against Arizona than he did against Green Bay. However, the finger injury is affecting RW3’s throws more than he will let anyone know. His inability to make effective throws significantly hampers an already compromised offense. Maybe it’s time that the Seattle Seahawks turn back to Geno Smith starting at quarterback? Excuse me; I’m going to throw up.

Arizona sacked Wilson four times last Sunday. On two of those sacks, it looked like he made his reads, saw that no one was open, and then looked for the sack to come and end the play. Usually, Wilson either makes an incredible play or takes off running. Against the Cards, Russ ran twice for two yards.

Russ Dreaming of Greener Pastures?

Russ doesn’t look like his usual self. It’s just speculation, but might he be looking to leave the Seattle Seahawks? Maybe he just wants out no matter what happens in Seattle this offseason?

It’s too early to know for sure what he’s thinking. However, this team looks off (“Breaking News” there, I know, but the defense still plays hard). The offense is stuck in Groundhogs Day, repeating the same things over and over again and expecting different results. Again, not breaking news. From my perspective, it looks like maybe some people are going through the motions and wanting the end of the season to get here soon.

Why Russell Might Leave

Since Wilson returned from his finger injury, he’s completed 34/66 passes for 368-yards with zero touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s rushed seven times for 34 yards and been sacked seven times. This is not the Seattle Seahawks quarterback we have all come to expect. As that tweet alludes to, might Wilson want to leave after this year?

He’s on his third offensive coordinator in his career. Strangely the Seattle Seahawks offense has largely been the same during this time. Run the ball frequently and look for a big pass play down the field. There are only two constants in Seattle since 2012, Pete Carroll and Wilson. So, sure a case can be made that Carroll is the reason for the offense being the same. That is a conversation for another day.

However, Wilson has been in the NFL long enough that his game should have grown and evolved. Consequently, that is not the case. Wilson does not utilize the middle of the field like you’d expect a nine-year veteran to do. Too often, he’s content to go with Carroll’s offensive game plan.

Unfortunately, for the Seattle Seahawks, Marshawn Lynch is not running the ball for them. Since Lynch left Seattle, the offense has not been the same. The catchphrase “Let Russ Cook” has grown. With the idea being that Russ can carve up a defense. Consequently, that is not the case. He’s a great quarterback, just not on the same level as Peyton Manning or Drew Brees.

Why Did Russ Return so quickly?

It’s a simple answer, Wilson is a tremendous competitor. Also, the Seattle Seahawks’ season still had a legit chance at the playoffs. The team was 3-5 when he returned. So, getting the team’s leader and best quarterback should have served as a springboard for the team. Instead, the team has been flat.

Also, here’s something to file away for later. Russ wasn’t happy with the Seattle Seahawks after last year. Might some of those thoughts from Russ be resurfacing? Let’s say they are. Might he want to return early from injury to limit some of the return that Seattle will receive from a trade? Sure, that’s a possibility, but why risk further injuring himself? Why not just continue to sit out and rehab?

What’s Next

Up next is Russell Wilson making my tiny mind come to light. As he feasts on a bad Washington Football Team secondary. Beyond that is the rest of the season and then the offseason. The Seattle Seahawks will have more draft picks this year than last year.

Listen, nobody thought Joe Montana would ever play for another team than San Francisco. Nobody thought this Seattle Seahawks season would go the way that it’s gone. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. This will be the last season Russell Wilson calls Seattle home. Seattle currently has many holes to fill. Once the year’s over, they’ll have even more. The team projects to have a little over 12 million to spend on free agents.

It will be hard for the Seattle Seahawks organization to patch up all their many holes with Wilson on the books. They’ll have an easier time fixing the team with a Wilson trade. This is extremely unfortunate to say, but it’s also the world we live in.
