Seattle Seahawks fans take it easy on your team

Seattle Seahawks fans had it so good for so long they forgot what a mediocre or even bad team looks like. They went 8-9 this season, but some 12s believe the sky is falling.

The Seattle Seahawks won 100 games in the last decade, which is fifth in the NFL. This season wasn’t their best showing, with an 8-9 record. Some of their fans believe that’s enough to justify blowing up the team now. Is it really that bad?

There are horrible fan bases in the sports world, and everyone knows it. Philadelphia fans are universally regarded as some of the most Cro-Magnon out there (just ask Santa Claus). Anyone who watched footage of the Bills Mafia tailgating knows they have some beauts up there in Buffalo as well. The Yankees/Red Sox rivalry isn’t just on the field either. The faithful from both teams make every effort to be as insufferable as possible. Try dealing with Alabama football fans some time; it’s not pretty.

This year though, there’s a new entry into the entitled fan pantheon. Seattle Seahawks fans may be Number 12 on the field, but they’re working their way up to Number 1 on the “ugh, please stop” fandom scale.

It’s just one year

Apparently, one season of luck going against them has made the Seattle Seahawks a garbage franchise that needs to fire, trade, or cut everyone. All the leaders need to be publicly flogged under the space needle and replaced with whoever is lying around. Bring back Darell Bevel; they haven’t won without him, right?

Apparently, much like great defensive backs, Seattle Seahawks fans seem to have awfully short memories. They’ve spent the last decade or so as the west coast’s version of the Patriots, winning while rebuilding on the fly. This year their luck in one-score games finally evened out, and their best player missed 1/4 of the season, and suddenly the team is done. That’s a little short-sighted.

The Seahawks are literally two Geno smith turnovers from going to tiebreakers with Philadelphia for a playoff spot. Ask a Texans fan what they would give to be .500 right now. I mean, if they existed, you could ask one. But still, after one so-so season, there are calls to dump coach Pete Carroll and GM John Schneider. Meanwhile, Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner can get traded away for a slew of draft picks.

These are the fans that have it rough

Jaguars fans came to the team’s final game in clown regalia to protest years of ineptitude in the sunshine state. The New York Giants played an NFL game and somehow had negative passing yards. Their crosstown rivals followed that performance up when they dealt themselves another punch in the crotch by choking away a victory against Tampa.

These are franchises that need to fire everyone and start over. Though Jacksonville wanting to interview Bill O’Brien to do anything but hold the cord attached to the head coach’s headset is a sure sign that they still don’t get it.

These are fan bases that deserve to wail and gnash their teeth. The Detroit Lions are so bad they have a shot at the first pick in the draft. And this season still feels like a huge step forward for them.

Seattle had a mediocre season, and their fans treat it as the end of civilization. I know it’s disappointing but come on, the team still has a solid foundation moving forward. That’s not going Pollyanna or seeing the glass half full with rose-colored glasses. There is plenty about this team to look forward to. It’s been a good run under Carroll, and it isn’t over yet.
