Seattle Seahawks: A familiar face returns to the team

This week the Seattle Seahawks re-signed last year’s backup quarterback Geno Smith. Now the battle is between him and Drew Lock to be the starter on Week 1.

The Seattle Seahawks re-signed last year’s backup quarterback Geno Smith. The deal is for one year at $7M. That’s quite a significant raise in pay from last year, especially when you think about his on-field performance in Seattle. With Smith signed, it now looks like Smith will be the Week 1 starter. Or at least competing for it against Drew Lock.

Rumors were floating around that the Seattle Seahawks’ organization was genuinely intrigued with Lock as the team’s starting quarterback and possibly future at that position. That is if everything went well for him this season. However, now that Smith is back, that plan or idea mo longe seems to be the direction the organization is heading.

Sign of things to come?

We also need to note that Jacob Eason’s shot at being the starting QB for the Seattle Seahawks is officially dead. If we add in the idea that Seattle may still draft a rookie QB this year, it’s not only dead; it’s buried. Many believe that the Seattle Seahawks re-signing Smith is a harbinger of their draft plans, and they will take a quarterback with their first-round pick. Or if Seattle thinks a QB they like will fall to them in the second round, they could do it then.

Competing for Number 1

So, now the quarterback competition will be between Smith and Lock. Due to his familiarity with the Seattle Seahawks coaches, organization, and offense, Smith already has the upper hand. That makes him the odds on the favorite to start Week 1.

However, Lock’s talent and ceiling are intriguing. He has a stronger arm and is more willing to take chances. “No risk it. No biscuit,” as Bruce Arians says.

The major deciding factor will be decision-making. Which one of these quarterbacks can take care of the football and make the better decisions will be the winner. Seattle Seahawks fans saw firsthand what a Geno Smith-led offense would look like when he replaced Russell Wilson for three games last year.

Meanwhile, hope remains that Lock can turn his career around and reach the potential that many thought he had when Denver drafted him in 2019

The safe bet is on Smith being named the starter. The more exciting bet is on Lock. Either way, neither quarterback is the Seattle Seahawks’ long-term solution.
