Seattle Seahawks defense needs “Snacks” Damon Harrison

The Seattle Seahawks defense lost a few key players to injury on Sunday. They should use one of the open roster spots to sign defensive tackle Damon “Snacks” Harrison.

Two games into the 2020 season, the Seattle Seahawks defense overall hasn’t been very good. Sunday night, they lost edge rusher, Bruce Irvin, for the season with a torn ACL. Instead of replacing him with another man on the outside, GM John Schneider should use the open roster space in a way that makes the whole defense better. He should sign defensive tackle Damon Harrison.

It’s laughable to say Irvin is irreplaceable. Finding Seattle’s number 51 on television, during the Atlanta and New England games, was difficult at best. Benson Mayowa has been just as impactful. Fifth-round draft pick Alton Robinson looked good in camp. After being inactive for the first two weeks, he is ready to play. Additionally, second-round pick Darrell Taylor could be prepared to go by mid-season.

About the only quality free agent edge rusher on the market is 34-year-old Clay Matthews III. The 11-year pro has 91.5 career sacks, including eight last year with the Rams. Denver was interested in signing him two weeks ago, but the sides couldn’t agree on terms. That means his asking price is high, and Seattle should “pass” on him.

A different approach

As mentioned above, the Seattle Seahawks defense, as a whole, could improve by going in a different direction. It’s clear by now that Jarran Reed, Poona Ford, Bryan Mone, and whoever else takes an occasional snap on the team’s interior defensive line are overmatched. There is absolutely no push from the middle.

Aaron Donald 2.0 isn’t just sitting out there waiting to sign with a team. As great as it would be to have someone of that quality, Seattle can do just fine with a defensive tackle who can push the pocket slightly and force opposing quarterbacks to take a deeper drop. Also, the Seahawks need someone to plug the inside rushing lanes. Damon Harrison can do both those jobs. By making the interior D-Line stronger, the edge rushers can create a little more havoc.

Schneider should be able to reel in the big defensive tackle for a reasonable price. He has one mega carrot to dangle. The Emerald City team is in prime position to take home it’s second Lombardy Trophy.

What “Snacks” can bring to the Seattle Seahawks defense is a potential difference-maker. Even if the best he can achieve is a stalemate 75 percent of the time, it’s still better than what head coach Pete Carroll has right now.
