Seattle Seahawks: D.K. Metcalf’s busy offseason is getting busier
So far it’s been a busy offseason for Seattle Seahawks wide receiver D.K. Metcalf. On the heels of his successful 100m sprint debut, Metcalf is signed up to play in the celebrity softball game at MLB’s All-Star weekend, July 11.
Seattle Seahawks All-Pro receiver D.K. Metcalf is coming off his best professional season to date. This offseason, he’s enjoying some of his fame. This offseason, Metcalf already participated in a professional 100m dash against Olympic-quality competition. Next up, he’ll be part of the MLB’s Celebrity All-Star softball game in July. Throw in the Seahawks “voluntary” minicamp, and this may arguably be Metcalf’s busiest offseason.
It’s his time
I’m all for professional athletes experiencing success in their respective sport. Also, for them doing what they want in the offseason. Each fan fantasizes about what they would do if they were a professional athlete. We all had dreams of being professional football, basketball, or baseball players at one point in our life. The stereotypical fan thinks and expects someone like Metcalf to do nothing but practice and train in their offseason.
That’s what leads to burnout. A true pro athlete’s offseason is only like a month. Then their back in the gym working on their bodies and studying the game to get better. So, of a full calendar year, they get about one month off to rest and recover. That’s not factoring in if they need surgery. So, I applaud Metcalf’s off-season agenda.
More fans need to support what Metcalf is doing this off-season. So far in his career, he has proven that he works hard. I mean, with a body like he’s got, I don’t think a day off and an extra cheeseburger will wreck him completely. I’m willing to go out on a limb and say that Metcalf had all these events scheduled in his off-season plans so that they wouldn’t mess up his training for the 2021 NFL season.
However, if Metcalf has a down year, lots of fans will immediately point to these two events. “Metcalf needs to focus on his sport. He’s a football player, not a sprinter.” Of course, one of the big skills football players need is their speed. But I digress. There is also nothing wrong with cross-training and developing other muscle groups.
Have a little faith
Good for Metcalf for showing off his wheels against other speed demons, not named Budda Baker. Now, it probably wasn’t a fair race for him as D.K. carries an additional 60 pounds or so compared to his opponents, but I’d say he held his own. I hope what Metcalf did encourages other NFL players to test their speed.
I trust DK Metcalf and what he’s doing with his off time and that it won’t hamper or hinder him for the upcoming NFL season. Let’s not forget his goal is to take down Calvin Johnson‘s receiving records. Besides, I look forward to him crushing a softball in the thin air of Denver.
