Seattle Seahawks: 4 Takeaways from 33–13 win at Houston

Rashaad Penny, Seattle Seahawks.

The Seattle Seahawks went to Houston over the weekend and returned to the Pacific Northwest with a victory. The game was in doubt for a half, but then Seattle pulled away in the end for a 30–13 win.

Congratulations to the  Seattle Seahawks as they put together their FIRST winning streak of the year! Seattle looked dominating at times en route to a 33–13 win. Here are our top four takeaways

1. Russell Wilson to Tyler Lockett

This is more of the Russel Wilson-led Seattle Seahawks offense 12s have come to watch and expect. They moved the ball down the field. Whether it’s from his deep bombs, short to intermediate throws, or checking into a dominant running game. Maybe that dominant running game is the missing ingredient from the offense and why it’s struggled so much this year (more on that coming up).

The Wilson to Tyler Lockett connection looked as good as ever. Over the last four games, the duo has accumulated 27 targets resulting in 19 catches for 421-yards, two touchdowns, and a two-point conversion. Meanwhile, RW3’s connection with D.K. Metcalf has been serviceable. This duo accumulated 28 targets, resulting in 14 catches for 147 scoreless yards. I have a feeling a Metcalf explosion is nearing.

Back to Russ. There were several plays where the pocket collapsed or broke down, and he had to roll out. Russ never really looked to take off running, which is a common thing for him this year. A lot of those scrambles result in chunk plays. The one thing missing from this Seattle Seahawks offense is Wilson running for positive yardage.

2. Penny for your Thoughts?

A performance like he had on Sunday is why Seahawks GM John Schneider drafted Rashaad Penny in 2018. The fourth-year pro had his best game of the year and arguably of his career in Houston. Penny turned 16 carries into 137-yards and two touchdowns. Having a dominant rushing attack greatly helped the Seattle Seahawks offense as a whole.

Now, let’s keep in mind this game came against a pitiful Houston team who has made many of their 2021 opponents look good. If Penny can repeat these types of results, he just might force the Seattle Seahawks into offering him a contract extension.

3. Mr sub-20

A quick shoutout to punter Michael Dickson. Special team players usually don’t get mentions unless it’s for a streak, a game-winner, an incredible play, or they’ve blundered something poorly. Sunday, the thunder(foot) from down under was his usual outstanding self on Sunday. The Seattle Seahawks punter added to his already spectacular year, with two more punts downed inside the 20-yard line to bring his NFL leading total to 33.

4. Defensive Upstarts

Ugo Amadi did his best Jamal Adams impression against Houston. With the All-Pro safety out of action, Amadi flew around the field, making his presence known. He finished with six tackles, a tackle for loss, and two pass deflections. He’ll need to continue to play at a high level because it gets much tougher next week.

Second-year edge player Darrell Taylor recorded his team-leading sixth sack of the season on Sunday. Maybe, just maybe, the Seattle Seahawks have their future pass-rushing stud. Obviously, this is still yet to be determined but at this point, things are looking up for him.

Finally, the Seattle Seahawks run defense basically shut down Houston’s running game. The Texans ran 25 times for 63-yards (a 2.5-yard average per carry). Rex Burkhead led the way with 40-yards rushing on 11 caries. It was a good warmup for what lies ahead.

Earlier in the season, Houston beat a really bad Jacksonville and then somehow beat a good Tennessee team. Unfortunately, Seattle split those two matchups. The Seahawks finished 3–1 against the AFC South this year.

Next week, the Seattle Seahawks face a huge test against the Los Angeles Rams.
