Seattle Mariners: Week 5 injury updates
Our weekly look at injured players on the Seattle Mariners roster. What is their status, and when will they return.
The 2022 season is four weeks old. Like many other MLB teams, the Seattle Mariners are dealing with several injuries.
Marco Gonzales, SP
Last Wednesday in Tampa, Marco Gonzales took a 109 mph comebacker to his left wrist off the bat of Harold Ramirez. He was down for a minute but got up fairly quickly. As a precaution, M’s manager Scott Servais pulled him from the game.
X-rays on the wrist were negative. Gonzales will make his next scheduled start which is Monday night in Houston.

Mitch Haniger, OF
It’s been a tough start to the 2022 season for Mitch Haniger. He’s been in and out of the lineup several times already, and his latest injury looks like it will keep him on the shelf for a prolonged period.
After a two-week absence due to COVID-19, Haniger returned to the Seattle Mariners on Friday in Miami. No stranger to injuring himself in the batter’s box, Haniger rolled his ankle on his first swing back. He stayed in long enough to get a base hit but knew something was wrong and came out of the game.
After the game, Haniger was in a walking boot. A subsequent MRI showed a Grade 2 high ankle sprain. There is no return date as Servais recently said Mitch would be out for “some time.”
Kyle Lewis, OF
Kyle Lewis is making great strides in his return from June knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Two weeks ago, he started taking live batting practice. More recently, K-Lew has participated in extended spring training games at the team’s Peoria, AZ complex.
The next step is to get him on a rehab assignment. If all goes well, Lewis could return by the end of May.
Sergio Romo, RP
Veteran Sergio Romo has been out of action since spring training with shoulder inflammation. He is back in Seattle throwing simulated games. The goal is for him to rejoin the team when the M’s begin a seven-game homestand on Friday.

Ken Giles, RP
We are into the second month of Ken Giles‘ second season with the Seattle Mariners, and he is yet to throw a pitch that counts for the team. He is currently sidelined with a right middle finger injury. Giles is rehabbing the injury and on a throwing schedule. While there is no definitive timetable for a return, Giles looks to be about a month away.
Taylor Trammell, OF
Taylor Trammell didn’t make the Mariners out of spring training. He got off to a decent start at Triple-A Tacoma before injuring his hamstring while running out a ground ball.
Evan White, 1B
Out since last year, Evan White had Sports Hernia surgery in late March. He’s a long way from a return. Besides, it will be tough for him to win a roster spot even when he does get back.
Emerson Hancock, P
The Seattle Mariners shut down Emerson Hancock late last season due to arm issues. He rehabbed all winter and looked set to go this spring. Unfortunately, a lat injury has the M’s 2020 first round pick on the shelf again.
Casey Sadler, RP
After such a great 2021 season, Casey Sadler‘s shoulder injury this spring was very disappointing. Surgery to repair the injury will keep him on the shelf all season.
