Seattle Mariners: Streaking (Abraham) Toro
Seattle Mariners second baseman Abraham Toro is making his acquisition (and Jerry Dipoto) look smart. Toro has been hot a hitter since being a part of the Mariners. Not looking anything like the hitter he was with Houston.
There was a lot of consternation about the trading of Kendall Graveman to Houston. It was a trade that divided the Seattle Mariners fan base. Half hated Graveman being dealt. The other half loved the acquisition of Abraham Toro. Frankly, both sides are right. Graveman was a big impactful weapon of the bullpen. His loss is felt. A fact that wasn’t talked about a lot is this was an interdivision trade AND done when both teams were currently facing each other.
However, Toro has been equally amazing. In fact, in Toro’s first 19 games with the Seattle Mariners he got on base in 18 of them! The stats during Toro’s streak: 68AB, 11R, 22H, 5 2B, 3HR, 8RBI, 9BB, 2HBP, 9K, 1SB, .324BA, .418OBP, .529SLG, .947OPS, and .339BAbip. Talk about making a first impression! However, during that streak the Mariners went 9-10.
Unfortunately, like all good things they must end at some point. In the recent three game series against Texas, Toro’s streak ended in the opening game. How about some good news? The raging bull (possible nickname for Toro?) is streaking again. Currently on a ten-game hit streak! During this new streak Toro is batting .342 with a .390 OBP, .759 OPS and a .382 BAbip.
More importantly, the Seattle Mariners are 5-4 during this stretch. Consequently, that’s what fans have come expect from the M’s. Looking at a lot of metrics the Seattle Mariners should be a .500 ball club. However, all year long this team is exceeding expectations. Currently, the M’s are within striking distance of a playoff-birth.
The question everyone is asking is where Toro will play next year. Just like Ty France, Toro is a third baseman by trade who can play second. It all starts with what GM Jerry Dipoto decides to do with Kyle Seager. If Seager stays, option picked up, Toro will be at second. If Seager goes, option not picked up, Toro and France will compete for the third base job. For now, Toro needs to keep doing what he’s doing.
