Seattle Mariners: Kyle Seager’s Last Dance

Seattle Mariners
Kyle Seager, Seattle Mariners.

Free Agent or Trade route

There is always free agency or maybe most likely a trade scenario that Mariners can take to replace Seager. According to MLB.com, the 2022 third baseman free agent class currently includes Nolan Arenado (opt-out), Kris Bryant, Eduardo Escobar,  and José Ramírez (club option).

It’s too early to even speculate on who may still be available this winter. There are just too many different scenarios that can happen between Opening Day and free agency. For example,

  • Does Justin Turner retire? Thus, allowing the Seager brothers to play together in Los Angeles?
  • Or does Corey leave the City of Angels and take his brother with him?
  • If Oakland A’s Matt Chapman has a great year, is he priced out of Bill Beane’s preferred salary range?
  • Will the New York Mets move J.D. Davis?
  • When Miguel Andujar comes back, do the Yankees move one of their two third basemen (Gio Urshella)?
  • Does Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto pull a big move and trade for Trevor Story to play short and slide Crawford over to third? Or maybe Story goes to third?

To throw another monkey wrench in the machinery, the entire market depends on which teams are in contention for a playoff spot the last week of July. At this point, the variables are endless.
