Former Seattle Mariners Rookie of the Year, Kyle Lewis, recently took some swings against live pitching as he recovers from a knee injury. He’s not game-ready yet, but his return is getting closer.

The Seattle Mariners got some good news this week. Former Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis faced off against some live pitching at the team’s Arizona complex. Lewis is not yet ready to be playing spring training games just yet. However, he is progressing well in his recovery from his right meniscus tear.

General Manager Jerry Dipoto didn’t provide a timetable for Lewis’ return. With the lack of information, it leaves M’s fans guessing as to when K-Lew will be back with the team again. The fact that Lewis is hitting live pitching means that his next hurdle to clear will be playing in the outfield. Additionally, he’ll need to play in some minor league games before making his way back up.

Hypothesis of K-Lew’s return

Putting some pieces together, we get an idea of when Lewis might return to the Seattle Mariners. On April 7th, he was placed on the 10-Day injured list. As opposed to the 60-Day injured list. This means the team doesn’t think Lewis would be out all that long. If he were to follow through on 10 days to the exact date, then his return would be Sunday, April 17th. That’s not likely to happen since he just started taking live batting practice.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility, however, that by the end of the month or close to it that Lewis is out on his minor league assignment. Considering the fact that he’s had a few big knee injuries, Seattle Mariners fans should expect the team to take it slow and not rush him. It would be extra helpful to the ball cub if youngsters Julio Rodriguez and Jarred Kelenic continue to produce in the big leagues.

Expectations

This will lessen the team’s need or want to rush Lewis back and risk re-injury. Once Lewis is back with the Seattle Mariners, don’t expect him to see a lot of time playing in the outfield. Most likely, he’ll enter the DH rotation.

It also means others will lose playing time. Regardless, the top priority and main takeaway is that Lewis is progressing well. Hopes are still high for his return to the team this season and the contributions he’ll make.
