Seattle Mariners: Injury updates – Week ending 5/13/22
Our weekly look at injured players on the Seattle Mariners roster. What is their status, and when will they return. Week ending 5/13/22.
The 2022 season is a little more than a month old. Like many MLB teams, the Seattle Mariners are dealing with several injuries. Over the past week, they suffered another one to a key player.
Tom Murphy, C
Off to a great start to the 2022 season, catcher Tom Murphy dislocated his shoulder last weekend. He’s currently trying to rebuild strength and stability through exercise and rehabilitation. There is no timetable for his return. It’s a shame he’s injured, Murph had a .303 average and .894 OPS in 14 games.
Mitch Haniger, OF
It’s been a tough start to the 2022 season for Mitch Haniger. He’s been in and out of the lineup several times already, and his latest injury looks like it will keep him on the shelf for a prolonged period.
After a two-week absence due to COVID-19, Haniger returned to the Seattle Mariners on April 29 in Miami. No stranger to injuring himself in the batter’s box, Haniger rolled his ankle on his first swing back. He stayed in long enough to get a base hit but knew something was wrong and came out of the game.
After the game, Haniger was in a walking boot. Tests on his ankle revealed a Grade 2 high ankle sprain. It will be several months before he rejoins the team.
Kyle Lewis, OF
Kyle Lewis is making great strides in his return from June knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. More recently, K-Lew began playing in extended spring training games at the team’s Peoria, AZ complex two weeks ago.
He has progressed to a rehab assignment in Tacoma. In Lewis’ first five games with the Rainiers, he went 7-for-20 with 2 home runs and 6 RBI.
He’s still working himself back into shape. So, it might be another two weeks before he’s back with the Mariners.

Sergio Romo, RP
Veteran Sergio Romo has been out of action since spring training with shoulder inflammation. He felt after a few recent rehab outings in Tacoma. The original plan was to bring Romo back for the recent homestand. Instead, he traveled with the team to New York and was activated before the weekend series against the Mets.
Ken Giles, RP
We are into the second month of Ken Giles‘ second season with the Seattle Mariners, and he hasn’t thrown a pitch in a real game. He is currently sidelined with a right middle finger injury.
Giles is rehabbing the injury and on a throwing schedule which so far constitutes playing catch. Since he hasn’t started throwing off a mound yet, the M’s moved him to the 60-day injured list to open a space on the 40-man roster.
Taylor Trammell, OF
Taylor Trammell didn’t make the Mariners out of spring training. He got off to a decent start at Triple-A Tacoma before injuring his hamstring while running out a ground ball.
Evan White, 1B
Out since last year, Evan White underwent Sports Hernia surgery in late March. The former Gold Glove first baseman is yet to resume baseball activities. Expect White to be sidelined for at least another few months.
Emerson Hancock, P
The Seattle Mariners shut down Emerson Hancock late last season due to arm issues. He rehabbed all winter and looked set to go this spring. Unfortunately, a lat injury put the M’s 2020 first round pick on the shelf again. He is recovered and will make his 2022 debut for the Double-A Arkansas Travelers on Tuesday.
Casey Sadler, RP
After such a great 2021 season, Casey Sadler‘s shoulder injury this spring was very disappointing. Surgery to repair the injury will keep him on the shelf all season.
