Seattle Mariners 3 Heroes of the Week – August 3-9, 2020
This article is the third installment of our Mariners Three Heroes of the Week for 2020. We honor the M’s best players over the previous seven days, August 3–9, 2020.
There is no easy way to put it. Week 3 for the Seattle Mariners was a 2–5 horror show. M’s pitching, for the most part, was terrible. Worse, their bats were often silent, including a 5–0 loss on Saturday night, where they recorded just one hit.
After a miserable week like that one, finding players to call heroes is difficult. Still, some players excelled while their team bottom out. These are the Seattle Mariners Three Heroes of the Week ending August 9, 2020.
Dishonorable Mention – Daniel Vogelbach
The dishonor should have gone to the Seattle Mariners’ bullpen. Instead, Daniel Vogelbach sunk to a new low. The hefty lefty went 1-for-17 for the week. What sealed his fate was a miserable at-bat against Colorado on Sunday.
Rockies reliever Tyler Kinney walked two batters and hit another to load the bases in the eighth inning of a 5–3 game. Kinney refused to throw his heater, relying on only a slider, which he couldn’t throw for strikes. On a 3–2 count, Vogelbach whiffed on a pitch that he knew was coming and well out of the strike zone to boot.
Honorable Mention – Justus Sheffield
Though the first four innings last Monday, Justus Sheffield was doing a nice job handling the red hot Oakland Athletics. Then the roof caved in on him during the fifth. For his next game, Sheffield stepped it up a notch.
He was impressive, getting his first win of the season on Sunday. Sheffield held the Rockies to just four hits, and no walks with eight strikeouts in six innings.
M’s No. 3 Hero – Dylan Moore
Seattle’s super-sub utility man made a strong case last week to be an everyday player. Dylan Moore started five games at three different positions and excelled.
Moore feasted on Angels’ pitching during the middle of the week. On Tuesday, he had two hits, including a home run, which he followed up with another three hits the next night. For the week, Seattle’s jersey number 25 scored four runs and drove in three more. He also swiped a pair of bases.
M’s No. 2 Hero – Austin Nola
As the starting catcher of a team playing 20 straight days, Austin Nola has to get some days off. He may have played in only four games, but he put up some impressive numbers when he was at the dish and not behind it. That included three straight games with two hits.
Nola was also clutch when it counted. He drove in a Mariners high seven runs last week. From August 3–9, his slash line was a very impressive .400/.438/.933/1.371.
M’s No. 1 Hero – Kyle Seager
Congratulations to the new Mr. 200. On Wednesday night Kyle Seager launched a third-inning rocket shot to right field off of Angels relief pitcher Ryan Butcher. Until that blast, the Seattle Mariners had only three other players in team history with 200 or more home runs. Seager joins a very exclusive club, which includes Ken Griffey Jr. (417), Edgar Martinez (309), and Jay Buhner (307).
That alone would have landed him on the Seattle Mariners hero list this week, but Seager did much more. He also led the M’s in hits with seven hits and five runs scored.
