Portland Trail Blazers: 1 Fork in the Road 2 Directions

Portland Trail Blazers
Nassir Little, Portland Trail Blazers.

The other, and possibly more prudent option, would be to move on from Lillard. Most of the roster is much younger, and the team is nowhere near a championship contender.

Right now, the Suns, Mavericks, Clippers, Nuggets, Warriors, Grizzlies, Pelicans, and Wolves are indisputably better teams. Do Rip City fans want to spend three years watching Dame breakdown while the Blazers fight to make the play-in? In a word, depressing.

Where to send him? That’s a little murkier, but there are a few possibilities. The Knicks have a million picks and players they can add to match salaries. With Donovan Mitchell now in Cleveland, NYK management might be desperate.

In the same area, Brooklyn has some interesting young players and the enigmatic Ben Simmons, who might thrive as a third banana in a small market like Portland. Dallas is also worth exploring. The Mavs are always aggressive and looking for a second star to pair with Luca.

So, Mr. Cronin, it looks like you have two options. There are small moves to shift around minutes and players, which is akin to shuffling deck chairs around the Titanic. Or you can finish what you started last year and complete the Portland Trail Blazers rebuild around Simons, Sharpe, and Little.

One path leads to about a half decade of mediocrity, the other to the unknown. I’d rather go for it all and come up short than settle for a participation trophy for the foreseeable future.
