The Washington Huskies advanced to 7-2 in 2022 with a hard-fought 24-21 win over Oregon State. Here are our seven big takeaways.

The Washington Huskies won their seventh game of 2022, defeating Oregon State 24-21. OSU didn’t make it easy on Washington.

Just as the score indicates, it was a close game. The Washington Huskies never led until Peyton Henry put through a 22-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining in regulation.

Takeaway #1 – Momentum Breaker

The lights went out with 11: 36 minutes remaining in the game, which caused about a 25-minute delay. The Huskies had just tied the game at 21-21. Their second TD in as many possessions. After the unscheduled break, both teams were unable to sustain drives and had to punt.

Takeaway # 2 – Clutch-Penix

Michael Penix Jr is a cool quarterback. Even though he gave up a pick-six late in the second quarter, allowing the Beavers to take a 14-7 lead into halftime, he kept himself together.

Eighteen times Penix had to throw on third down and completed 11. Most of them were longer than 10 yards. It’s one thing to throw against a good secondary; it’s another when that good secondary knows the pass is coming.

On the final drive, he was the general leading his troops down the field. Penix completed 8 of 10 for 67 yards.

Takeaway # 3 – Coming Through When it Counts

With the score tied 21-21, Washington got the ball back on their 3 yard line with 4:28 left in the fourth quarter. The Huskies couldn’t make any mistakes, and they didn’t.

Running back Cam Davis had three receptions and a run for 15 yards. Receivers Ja’Lynn Polk and Rome Odunze also had a couple of receptions each.

The end result was an 18-play, 92 yard drive that put Henry in position to kick the winner.

Takeaway #4 – Bend Don’t Break

The Huskies allowed a touchdown on OSU’s first possession of the game (which included a penalty by Jeremiah Martin). After that, UW followed the bend but don’t break rule they used all year.

Twice in the first half, the Huskies stopped Oregon State on fourth and short in the red zone. Had the Beavers scored on those drives and gone up 14-0, it would have been hard for the offense to come back.

Takeaway #5 -They’re Back

Before the game, Washington Huskies Coach Kalen DeBoer talked about how healthy the team was coming into the game. UW finally had all their starter in the secondary back in action.

The unit proved how dangerous they could be when at full strength. They held Oregon State to 87 passing yards.

Takeaway #6 – He’s Here, He’s There

Jeremiah Martin seemed to be all over the field. The box score shows he only made one tackle, assisted on two others, and batted down a ball. But Oregon State made sure to avoid him when possible.

Linebacker Cam Bright also had a busy day with 10 tackles and UW’s only sack of Ben Gulbranson.

Takeaway # 7 – Staying Alive

By winning this knockout game, the Washington Huskies can still make it to the Pac-12 Championship game. It won’t be easy; next week, UW plays 8th-Ranked Oregon in Eugene. Win that one, and Washington’s chance significantly improves.

Go Dawgs!
