5 Overreactions from Seattle Seahawks Week 14 Loss Vs. San Francisco 49ers
The Seahawks lost a one-score game to the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers guaranteed themselves a playoff spot by securing the NFC West division title, while the Seahawks were dealt a significant blow to their postseason aspirations. Without further ado here are the overreactions.
The Seattle Seahawks hosted San Francisco on Thursday Night Football. On the line was the division title. Unfortunately, the Seahawks weren’t able to come away with a victory. San Francisco has now clinched the division title and spot in the playoffs. Where does Seattle go from here? Let’s overreact to the game.
Kenneth Walker III does not have what it takes to be an NFL running back.
Kenneth Walker III struggled once again to get any traction in the run game. He carried the ball 12 times but only gained 47 yards. He only added 32 yards receiving on four catches as well.
He has struggled over the last few weeks after looking great earlier in the season. It has to be a question of whether the season is starting to wear on him or if the defenses have figured out his tendencies. The Seattle Seahawks do not have any other great options as Rashaad Penny is already out with an injury. Travis Homer has looked more suited to a special teams role lately, especially after his fumble in this loss.
Tyler Lockett should probably give up his punt-returning duties.
Tyler Lockett did not fumble any punts in this game but he also did not return any. There were a total of six punts by San Francisco’s Mitch Wishnowsky but Lockett did not gain any yards on the returns.
It is enough to make you wonder if Lockett should surrender his punt-returning duties to a younger player like Godwin Igwebuike. He has been productive on his kick returns and it would not be a leap to expect similar production if he was given a chance to return punts.
The Seahawks’ pass rush unit has morphed from a productive and effective unit into one of the league’s worst.
The Seattle Seahawks’ pass rush unit continued their subpar performances with one sack and only three QB hits on the day. They started the season on a tear but have struggled lately and have allowed QBs to tear apart their younger secondary.
Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant have not looked nearly as dominant and have come back down to earth to look like the rookies that they are. The defense gave up a 117.6 passer rating to Mr. Irrelevant (last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft) Brock Purdy. He racked up 217 yards with 17 completions of 26 attempts and two TDs (both going to George Kittle).
Jason Myers is the NFL’s best kicker this season.
Jason Myers connected on all of his kicks in the game for the Seattle Seahawks. He is 26 of 27 on the field goals he has attempted and has made 37 of 38 of his extra points as well. He continues to be a strength on this team that seems to be falling apart at the seams lately.
He did what he could for an offense that struggled to get any sort of rhythm and got dominated by one of the best, if not the best, defenses in the league this year. The offense was not able to get a touchdown until there were only 3:35 left in the 4th quarter.
The Seahawks’ postseason hopes are over and they might as well pack it in.
After tonight’s game, the Seattle Seahawks’ record fell to 7-7 on the season. They also officially lost their division title to the 49ers. Geno Smith looks like the career backup that he has been before this season. He got sacked three times and he also fumbled one time, fortunately for him and the Seattle Seahawks, Abraham Lucas was able to recover it.
This team has a lot of good/great young players but lately, they have been showing their age by making rookie mistakes. They have struggled to maintain quality running back play since Penny went down with an injury and there is no wide receiver or tight end that has stepped in to supplement their lack of production.
There have been bright spots like the continued production of Igwebuike from the kick returner position. And Woolen still has the potential to be the rookie of the year or even defensive player of the year if he finishes out the season strong.
When your punter gets 349 yards on his punts and your offense only manages to get 277 total yards, it is going to be difficult to be competitive with most teams. When the Seattle Seahawks are forced to be one-dimensional and have to throw the ball, this team continues to struggle to protect Smith. This has been shown in his production as well. He, unfortunately, seems to be turning back into the pumpkin that he was before this cinderella ride of a season.
