4 Overreactions to the Seattle Seahawks victory over the NY Jets
The Seattle Seahawks faced off against the NY Jets in Week 17. Both teams fighting for a spot in the playoffs. And only one team can win, and that team was the Seahawks. Here are this week’s overreactions.
The Seattle Seahawks hosted the NY Jets in a Week 17 matchup. Not only are both teams competing for a playoff spot but two players are competing for an individual award. Tariq Woolen and Sauce Gardner both are fighting for the Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
The Seattle Seahawks were on a three-game losing streak coming into this game. Whereas the Jets were on a four-game losing streak. One of those streaks was going to end this week. Thankfully, the Seahawks came out on top with a dominant 23-6 victory. Now, let’s get to this week’s overreactions.
The Seattle Seahawks have the best running back in the NFL
There was a lot of controversy when the Seattle Seahawks drafted Kenneth Walker III. However, he has proven all of the doubters wrong and GM John Schneider correct in this selection. Walker is currently third in rookie rushing yards with 936 yards. To be fair, he’s only three yards behind Dameon Pierce for second place. Walker is still third at a 66.9 rushing average per game.
Meanwhile, Walker holds the record for the most rushing yards by a rookie running for the Seattle Seahawks. And while this season has been a huge success for him and the Seahawks, next year will be even better. For those that play fantasy football, you can expect Walker to be the best fantasy running back next season.
The Seattle Seahawks defense wakes up
Part of the reason the Seattle Seahawks were on a three-game losing streak was because of the poor play from the defense. They had been giving up at least three scores, averaging 25 points against. However, this week the defense came roaring back to life and helped the team get a big win.
One of the biggest reasons why the Seattle Seahawks were losing was because every opponent was able to easily and successfully run the ball on them. This week they held the Jets to a total of 75 rushing yards. And they also forced three turnovers too, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery. If this is how the defense can play next week against the LA Rams, then there’s a good chance the Seahawks get into the playoffs.
The Defensive Rookie of the Year award is all but wrapped up
As previously mentioned, there is a big debate as to who should win the defensive rookie of the year award. Currently, the front-runner is Sauce Gardner. However, the fans of the Seattle Seahawks strongly disagree and believe Tariq Woolen should be in the lead.
Well, considering everyone got to watch both of these two rookies essentially go head to head in this game the winner of the award is obviously clear.
- Woolen: seven tackles, four solo, one pass deflection, and one fumble recovery
- Gardner: four tackles, three solo, and four pass deflections
And while Gardner did a great job on D.K. Metcalf, one catch on five targets for three yards. However, Metcalf’s final stat line could have looked different had he not had a big drop. So, combine this and the overall performance of Woolen and it’s obvious that Woolen is the best rookie cornerback in the NFL. And the obvious winner for DROY.
The career season just continues
Coming into the season many fans had serious questions about Geno Smith being the starting quarterback. And the overall outcome of the season for the Seattle Seahawks. Well, as he said after the win over Denver, there are a lot of fans who owe him an apology.
We are now in Week 17 and he is still the leader in completion percentage at 70.2%. And unless he has a truly catastrophic finale he should finish as the leader. And not only will he be the leader he’s also been voted into his first-ever Pro Bowl. The next question will be how much money will the Seattle Seahawks pay him in his next contract.
He’s certainly shown he can run this offense to maximum efficiency and the Seattle Seahawks have the talent to compete for the playoffs and NFC West division crown. If the team is able to add some more rookie impact talent in this upcoming draft they could be even better in year two with Smith as the starting quarterback.
As previously stated, the Seattle Seahawks face the LA Rams in the regular season finale. The Seahawks will need to win this game and then get some help from Detroit in order to get into the playoffs. The playoffs are still a possibility but asking Detroit to beat Green Bay is a hail mary.
