2022 Pacific Northwest Sports Top 10: Number 1 – Pete Carroll
In our ongoing Pacific Northwest Sports Top 10 series, we move on to Number 1, Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll.
When talking about the Seattle Seahawks, you can’t help but bring up Pete Carroll. After all, he is the winningest head coach in team history. Carroll along with General Manager John Schneider, are the architects of one of the best and most dominant defenses in the past decade. Carroll is currently compiling a record of 112 wins, 63 losses, and one tie for a tidy .639 winning percentage.
Adding to his impressive Seattle coaching tenure are nine playoff berths, five NFC West Championships, two NFC Championships, and one Super Bowl Championship. For good measure, Carroll is also the winningest coach in Seahawks history in the playoffs with a 10-8 record.
Philanthropy
Like most high-profile coaches, Carroll is very active and involved in the community. In 2003 he started the Better LA initiative. The charity centers on ex-gang members who have turned their lives around and are dedicated to reducing gun violence in the community. Better LA works with works toward restoring peace and saving lives. At the heart of these is the empowerment and encouragement of young people for a better tomorrow.
In 2009 Carroll launched CampPete.com. Which is an online multiplayer game. It features arcade-style games, motivational messages from Pete, and a sports trivia section that also includes virtual football skills workshops. He also partnered with the YMCA’s Alive and Free program in 2011.
In 2013 Carroll and the founder of WE Day brought the first ever WE day to the United States. It is an event that inspires local students from around the state to earn their way into a concert through their hard work within the community. Then there is the Performance Science Institute Carroll co-founded at USC in 2017. Which is a new course of study at the university.
Pete Carroll's 3 Rules:
1. Be Early
"It's all about being organized and showing respect."2. Protect the Team
"Are you helping or hurting the team? Every decision has an impact."3. No Whining, Complaining, Excuses
"Positive attracts positive. Negative attracts negative."— The Coaches' Journal (@TheCoachJournal) August 3, 2022
Starting over
As the upcoming 2022 NFL season is set to get underway, Carroll will, in a way, be back to where he started in the Emerald City. All of the players from the Seattle Seahawks’ last Super Bowl appearance are now off the roster. Carroll and Schneider are building a new team that will, down the road, hopefully, yield the same level of success as they’ve previously achieved.
It is a long way back to the top of the mountain. However, Carroll and the Seahawks are already on their journey. The team has a lot of the necessary pieces in place already. They are optimistic that their newest players will be successful pieces as well. The upcoming season will most likely be rough and difficult. However, the future is bright for the Seattle Seahawks and head coach Pete Carroll.
Pete Carroll couldn’t make it through one preseason with Drew Lock before saying “screw it, I’ll do it myself”
